FAQs

Do I need to rinse potted aquarium plants before adding them to my tank?

No, you do not need to rinse our potted aquarium plants before adding them to your tank. All plants are aquarium-ready and can be planted directly after removing the packaging.

Are the potted plants fully rooted when I receive them?

Yes, every potted aquarium plant comes fully rooted with a strong, established root system. This helps them settle faster and grow more reliably compared to unrooted cuttings.

Why should I choose potted aquarium plants over cuttings?

Potted aquarium plants already have an established root system, giving them a head start in your aquarium. This results in faster settling, stronger growth, and a healthier aquascape from the beginning.

Are your potted aquarium plants safe for shrimp tanks?

Yes, all potted aquarium plants in our collection are safe for shrimp tanks and suitable for aquariums containing shrimp, fish, or both.

Can I choose potted plants based on where they go in my aquarium?

Yes, you can filter our potted aquarium plants by position, including foreground, midground, mid/background, and background. You can also filter by difficulty level, growth rate, and origin to find the right plants for your aquascape.

Potted Aquarium Plants — Fully Rooted Live Plants for Every Freshwater Tank

Explore our range of potted aquarium plants — hand-selected, freshly stocked, and dispatched from our UK facility. Every pot contains a fully established plant with a strong root system, ready to settle quickly and grow reliably from day one.

Why Choose Our Potted Aquarium Plants?

Our collection includes a wide choice of foreground, midground, and background plants ideal for aquascaping, planted tanks, and freshwater community aquariums. Every plant is grown in a pot with a strong, established root system for fast settling and reliable growth — a major advantage over cheaper cuttings that lack roots. All potted aquarium plants sold here are shrimp-safe, aquarium-ready, and require no rinsing, making them perfect for beginners and advanced aquascapers alike. By choosing potted varieties, you ensure your aquascape starts with the healthiest possible foundation for long-term success.

How to Choose the Right Potted Plant for Your Tank

The most important factor when choosing potted aquarium plants is position — where in the tank will the plant live? Foreground species like Hemianthus callitrichoides and Eleocharis stay low and spread across the substrate, while midground plants like Cryptocoryne wendtii and Bucephalandra add structure and colour to the centre of the aquascape. Background plants — Vallisneria, Hygrophila, and Rotala — grow tall and create the dense green curtain most planted tanks are built around.

If you prefer a fully planted look without needing to research individual species, our mixed plant bundles are hand-picked by our Plant Manager to cover all three positions in one order — a straightforward starting point for a new aquarium.

Do Potted Plants Need CO2?

Not all of them. Many of the most popular potted aquarium plants — including Anubias, Cryptocoryne, and Java Fern — grow well in a standard low-tech aquarium without CO2 injection, supported by a quality liquid fertiliser and consistent lighting. Every product in this collection is labelled Easy, Medium, or Advanced so you can filter by what suits your setup before you buy.

For species that attach to wood and rock rather than planting in substrate, our epiphyte collection covers Anubias, Java Fern, and Bucephalandra — all of which thrive without CO2 and are among the easiest aquarium plants available.

Potted Plants vs Other Plant Types

Potted plants are the most versatile option in the hobby — they suit virtually every aquarium type, from a simple goldfish tank to a high-tech Dutch aquascape. If you keep an unheated aquarium, check our coldwater aquarium plants — several potted species in that range, including Vallisneria and Cryptocoryne, tolerate temperatures as low as 15°C.

For the foreground specifically, our carpeting plants collection covers the low-growing species — Monte Carlo, Dwarf Hairgrass, and Glossostigma — that spread across the substrate to create the classic planted tank lawn effect. And if you want plants without any substrate involvement at all, floating aquarium plants sit on the water surface and require nothing more than being placed in the tank.
