Its dense branching structure provides perfect cover for shrimp to graze on biofilm, and a refuge for fish fry to hide. Marimo moss balls (Aegagropila linnaei) are technically a species of green filamentous algae naturally found in cold lakes across Japan and northern Europe, not a true moss - but they've become one of the most popular aquarium plants sold in the UK. A marimo moss aquarium plant needs almost no care: simply roll it gently during water changes to keep its spherical shape, and it will grow very slowly over years. They're particularly popular in betta tanks, shrimp tanks, and nano aquariums.
