    Description

Flame moss is an unusual aquarium moss that grows in a distinctively upward, spiralling form — the fronds twist as they extend upward, giving the plant the appearance of flickering green flames, particularly when viewed against gentle water movement. Unlike most aquarium mosses that spread horizontally across surfaces, flame moss grows vertically and creates distinctive upright planted accents that add strong visual interest to rocks and driftwood.

Flame moss grows in low light without CO2 injection and tolerates a wide range of water conditions. It attaches to hard surfaces over time and the upright spiralling habit is maintained as it grows. Good water movement near the moss helps the fronds remain tidy and well-shaped. Growth is slow but the effect is very striking when established.

Supplied as a portion in an 80cc cup. Attach to wood or rock using fine thread or aquarium-safe glue and allow several weeks to establish before removing the thread. The upright form makes it ideal as a vertical accent plant on individual pieces of hardscape where horizontal-growing mosses would not provide the same visual effect. Suited to aquariums of 20 litres and above.

    Common Questions

Why does flame moss grow upward instead of spreading?

The fronds of flame moss spiral and extend upward naturally — this is an inherent growth habit rather than a response to conditions. It gives it a distinctly different appearance from spreading mosses.

    Does it need CO2?

No — flame moss grows in low light without CO2 injection and is suitable for low-tech aquariums.

How do I attach it to hardscape?

Secure it to wood or rock using fine thread or aquarium-safe glue. Allow several weeks to establish before removing the thread.

Will the upward growth habit stay as it grows?

Yes — the spiralling, upward growth is maintained as the moss continues to develop.

Is it suitable for shrimp tanks?

Yes, fully. The upright fronds provide excellent shelter for shrimp and the surface biofilm is a valuable grazing resource.
