Description

Micranthemum Monte Carlo is a popular and visually striking foreground carpeting plant producing small, rounded, lime-green leaves on delicate creeping stems. When planted in groups under bright enough light and CO2, it spreads horizontally to form a dense, bright green carpet across the substrate — one of the most rewarding and visually impactful foreground effects in planted aquascaping.

It benefits from medium to bright light and CO2 supplementation for reliable carpeting growth. Without CO2 it grows more slowly and may not carpet as neatly, tending instead toward upward rather than horizontal growth. A nutrient-rich substrate supports healthy root development, and regular gentle trimming encourages a denser, more compact carpet over time.

Supplied as an established potted plant, Micranthemum Monte Carlo suits aquariums from 30 litres upward. It is considered easier to carpet than Hemianthus callitrichoides (HC Cuba) while still producing a similarly lush effect, making it one of the most sought-after foreground carpeting plants across all levels of the planted aquarium hobby.

Product FAQs

Helpful details before you buy.

Is Micranthemum Monte Carlo easy to grow?

Yes, Micranthemum Monte Carlo is one of the easier carpeting aquarium plants. It is a good choice for beginners who want a low foreground carpet without choosing something too demanding.

Does Micranthemum Monte Carlo need CO2?

Micranthemum Monte Carlo can grow without pressurised CO2, but it will usually grow faster, thicker and healthier with added carbon support, good aquarium lighting and regular fertiliser.

Where should I plant Micranthemum Monte Carlo?

Micranthemum Monte Carlo is best planted in the foreground of the aquarium. It stays low and spreads across the substrate to create a soft green carpet effect.

How tall does Micranthemum Monte Carlo grow?

Micranthemum Monte Carlo usually stays low, reaching around 5cm in height, which makes it ideal for the front of planted aquariums.

How much area will one pot of Micranthemum Monte Carlo cover?

One pot of Micranthemum Monte Carlo is usually enough for an area of around 15 x 15cm. For best results, split the pot into smaller portions and plant them with space between each section.

How do I plant Micranthemum Monte Carlo?

Remove the plant from the pot, gently separate it into smaller sections, and plant each piece into the substrate using tweezers. Avoid planting it as one large clump because smaller portions will spread more evenly.

Does Micranthemum Monte Carlo need strong lighting?

Micranthemum Monte Carlo performs best under good aquarium lighting, but it is more forgiving than many other carpeting plants. Stronger lighting usually encourages denser, more compact growth.

How fast does Micranthemum Monte Carlo grow?

Micranthemum Monte Carlo has a medium growth rate. Once settled, it will gradually spread across the substrate, especially when it has steady nutrients, suitable lighting and carbon support.
