FAQs

What is the best carpet plant for an aquarium?

Monte Carlo is one of the best carpet plants for most aquariums. It grows under medium lighting without CO2, spreads reliably across the substrate, and is suitable for beginners. For advanced aquascapes with CO2, Hemianthus callitrichoides (HC Cuba) creates a finer and denser carpet effect.

How do you grow carpet plants in an aquarium?

To grow aquarium carpet plants successfully, provide sufficient lighting, consistent nutrients, and good water flow across the substrate. Divide the plants into small portions and plant them 2 to 3 centimetres apart in a nutrient-rich substrate. Many carpeting plants begin spreading within 3 to 4 weeks.

How do you plant carpet grass in an aquarium?

To plant carpet grass such as Dwarf Hairgrass, divide the plant into small bunches and plant them 1 to 2 centimetres deep into the substrate, spacing them around 2 centimetres apart. Tweezers are recommended for precise planting and better establishment.

How do you plant carpet seeds in an established aquarium?

Aquarium carpet seeds are usually scattered onto bare substrate in shallow water to allow germination before full flooding. In established aquariums, most aquarists prefer tissue culture or plug carpeting plants because they establish more reliably than seeds.

Do carpet plants need CO2?

Not all aquarium carpeting plants require CO2. Easy species such as Monte Carlo, Staurogyne repens, and Dwarf Hairgrass can grow without CO2 in medium-light aquariums. More demanding species benefit significantly from CO2 for dense carpeting growth.

Aquarium carpet plants are low-growing freshwater species that spread across the substrate to create a natural green "lawn" effect in the foreground of your aquascape. When established correctly, carpeting aquarium plants deliver one of the most striking results in planted tank keeping — and they are more achievable than most beginners expect.

Our range of aquarium carpet plants includes species suited to every setup, from easy low-tech options to demanding aquascaping varieties that reward patience and precision.

Choosing the Right Carpeting Aquarium Plant

Not all planted aquarium carpet plants require the same conditions. The most important factor is always lighting — carpeting species grow at the bottom of the tank, where light is naturally weakest. Strong, consistent lighting encourages faster spreading and denser growth.

Easy aquarium carpet plants (no CO2 required)

Micranthemum Monte Carlo is the most beginner-friendly carpeting plant available. It spreads reliably under medium lighting without CO2 and is the plant we recommend to anyone starting their first carpet. Dwarf Hairgrass (Eleocharis) and Staurogyne repens are also excellent low-maintenance options.

Advanced carpet plants (CO2 recommended)

Hemianthus callitrichoides (HC Cuba) and Glossostigma elatinoides are among the most visually impressive planted aquarium carpet plants available, but both require high lighting, CO2 injection, and consistent fertilisation to establish and maintain. Rewarding for experienced aquascapers — challenging for beginners.

Getting the best results from carpeting aquarium plants

Plant small portions 2–3cm apart rather than in dense clumps — this encourages horizontal spreading rather than vertical growth. Ensure good water circulation across the substrate so CO2 and nutrients reach the plant canopy. Avoid trimming until the carpet is visibly rooted, typically 3–4 weeks after planting.
