    Description

Micranthemum Monte-Carlo is a popular and highly regarded foreground carpeting plant from Argentina producing small, rounded leaves on thin creeping stems that spread to create a dense, bright green carpet at substrate level. A more forgiving alternative to HC Cuba, it is widely used in planted aquascaping as a midground to foreground carpet plant that is achievable in a broader range of aquarium conditions.

It benefits from medium light and CO2 supplementation for the most compact, tight carpet growth and the fastest lateral spread. Without CO2 it still grows and spreads, though more slowly and with a somewhat looser, taller form. Regular trimming keeps the carpet dense and low and prevents it from growing upward. A practical and rewarding carpeting plant for intermediate hobbyists.

Supplied as a Tropica 1-2-GROW! tissue culture cup, this plant arrives completely free from snails, pest algae, and pesticide residue. Rinse the gel and plant small portions across the substrate. Suits aquariums from 30 litres upward — a popular and achievable carpeting plant that is fully shrimp safe and one of the most recommended alternatives to HC Cuba.

    Plant Sizes

The image of the plant you'll be receiving is just an example of what you can expect. Each plant is unique and may vary in size and shape, so it won't be an exact match to the photo. If we provide a size guide, keep in mind that it's just an estimate and that plants can vary in size depending on the time of year.

    WHAT TO EXPECT

Tissue cultured plants are supplied young and grown in a sterile environment, so they arrive free from snails, algae and pesticide residue. They may look smaller on arrival, but each cup contains multiple plantlets designed to be divided and planted out, where they establish quickly with minimal melt and grow into place.

Customers praised this carpeting plant for arriving in excellent, healthy condition and growing well with proper light and CO2. Many noted it spreads quickly and forms a good carpet. However, several shoppers found planting challenging, particularly with the tissue culture version lacking roots, causing plants to float. Some experienced initial melting.

    • Great product, it's already growing and spreading fast! Very pleased
    • The plants were in excellent condition and appear to be doing well
    • Brilliant low maintenance carpet plant, within 4-6 weeks my carpet is near complete!

Very good quality, but I did find it very hard to plant, and I had a lot of plant melting but new growth has started and I’m excited to see how it carpets.

    Healthy Plantlets

The plants were in excellent condition and I divided the mass into eight pieces. All are planted in the foreground and appear to be doing well although it is early days. Will certainly use you again - I made a mistake on my original order but you corrected my error without difficulty. Thanks.

not given enough time to give a fair rating as to how they are growing, so far satisfied with the results.

Though the leaves and stems, whilst small, were very healthy, the issue is when you come to plant it. There are no roots to speak of and even when cutting the mat into smaller squares to plant, when pushing into the substrate, the individual plants come loose and end up floating. I have more floating in my tank than actually planted. Wi never buy or recommend this again. When I complained to Aquaessentials, was unhelpfully told:
"The TC version of monte is certainly trickier than the potted in terms of planting. But once it starts to grow, it’s an easy plant which is undemanding.

The trick to this plant in the TC form is to leave it in clumps and then push it deep into the substrate - otherwise it has a tendency to float. Try sprinkling substrate or gravel gently over the top which helps hold it down.

The potted version is easier as you can leave rock wool on it which allows it to be anchored down making it less likely to float."

This would have been useful information for Aquaessentials to include on the product page rather than sending emails claiming it's one of the easiest plants to grow. Has definitely made me think twice about ordering from here again and I certainly don't intend to buy any more TC products.

Super little plant, the plants arrive in the little container in such a healthy state, planted in the substrate and are now visibly spreading around the front of the tank

Have used this plant as a staple "filler" for years. With decent light and CO2 it forms a good carpet. Also works well when clumps are wedged in-between stones which it will cling to and crawl over. Frequent trimming will result in smaller leaves if you want a look more akin to "Cuba" rather than "Monte Carlo"

Looks to have settled in quickly but only time will tell if this will grow well in my low light/tall tank.

Early days yet only a week in, planted as explained by Aqua Essentials and showing some early signs of growing but I think this will be a slow grower just hoping it covers the bottom of my tank.

Great little plant which arrived in perfect condition and was simple to plant. Wash the root gel off the bottom, cut up into small squares (I did mine about 1-1.5cm square) and plant around the foreground of the tank. The squares have already started growing a few days later.

    Product Details

    1. Grown in a laboratory

Tissue Cultured Plants are unique in so much as they are grown in a laboratory and not a greenhouse. As a result of this, a cast iron guarantee is offered which is 100% so snails and no pesticides.

    2. How to handle them

They're a bit different from potted plants because they're grown in an agae solution that contains nutrients and hormones to encrougage plants to grow. Some agar is liquid, others are more solid depending on what the growers prefers. Regardless once they arrive with you, acclimatise to room temperature and then rinse under luke warm tap water. Then plant up.

    3. Pot sizes

Nearly all TC pots are 5cm in diameter and the pots will range in fullness depending on many factors such as the natural growth speed of the plant and the time the grower has held them for. Sometimes the pots are exceptionally full and sometimes not so full - something we cannot control. But either way, they're still really good value when you look at the overall plant mass.

    Product FAQs

    Helpful details before you buy.

Is Micranthemum Monte-Carlo easier than HC Cuba?

Yes. Monte-Carlo is significantly more forgiving and can form a carpet without CO2 under medium light, though CO2 produces the best results. HC Cuba cannot achieve flat carpet growth without CO2.

    Does it need CO2?

CO2 is recommended for the tightest, lowest carpet. Without CO2 the plant still spreads but grows taller and looser. CO2 is not strictly essential.

    How does it spread?

Via creeping stems that spread laterally across the substrate. Plant small portions in a grid and the gaps fill in over several weeks under good conditions.

Is it safe for shrimp tanks?

Yes. As a Tropica 1-2-GROW! tissue culture plant it arrives free from snails, algae, and pesticide residue — excellent for shrimp aquariums.

How do I keep it as a carpet?

Trim regularly with scissors to keep the carpet low and dense. Without trimming Monte-Carlo grows upward and loses its carpeting quality.
