    Description

The floating moss ball is a buoyant spherical ball of aquarium moss designed to float at the water surface, creating an unusual and natural planted feature that requires no substrate, no attachment, and no positioning — it simply floats where gentle water movement takes it, drifting naturally and providing a living green sphere at the surface level of the aquarium.

As a floating plant the moss ball grows in low light without CO2 injection. It is easy to maintain — trim with scissors if it grows too large, and squeeze gently to remove excess water if needed. Shrimp and fry use the underside and the surface of the ball for shelter and grazing. The floating position gives it good light exposure and gas exchange at the surface.

Simply place in the aquarium and it floats immediately — no substrate, no planting, no attachment needed. It can be left to drift freely with water movement or guided to a preferred area of the tank. Suited to aquariums of 20 litres and above and effective as a natural, self-maintaining floating feature for shrimp tanks and community aquariums.

Customers praised these moss balls as "fun to watch bobbing about" and highly popular with shrimp, corys, and snails. Reviews highlight good quality and healthy arrival despite shipping delays. Some noted sparse moss coverage initially, though growth occurs over time. The wire attachment is discreet and effective for positioning at different tank levels.

    Love these

I have shrimp as well as corys, snails and other things that enjoy nibbling. They love the marimo moss balls and have loads but I wanted something a bit different for them. I saw these and debated it for a while then decided to give it a try. Within seconds of them being in the tank some shrimps had discovered one while one of my corys was pecking away at the bottom of the other. I have one in the still area of my tank, one in the air flow and one in between and they are so fun to watch bobbing about. They were delivered a day later than expected, purely due to Royal Mail, so I was concerned about the condition but they are super healthy and were still really damp thanks to great packaging. I was also worried about the “string” and if it would make my tank look messy but it really is super hard to see unless you are up close. Great additions to my tank and I expect I’ll be back to buy some more.

    Latest biorb purchase

Have bought this item several times. In place in my 30l biorb where the shrimps love them. I have 3 at different levels the shrimps settle on them especially if food gets attached to them.

I did not install these. there was too little moss I think on the ball but I am just beginner so who knows. ..

    Common Questions

    How does it float?

The ball is structured so that it naturally traps enough air to remain buoyant at the surface. It continues to float as it grows.

Does it need CO2 or special lighting?

No — moss grows under standard aquarium lighting without CO2 injection. The surface position gives it good natural light exposure.

Will shrimp and fish use it?

Yes — shrimp graze on the underside and surface of the ball. Fry also shelter within and around the floating moss.

    How do I maintain it?

Trim with scissors if it grows too large. Squeeze gently to remove excess water if the ball becomes heavier than desired.

Can I have multiple floating moss balls?

Yes — multiple balls can float together to create more surface coverage. They complement each other and provide more shelter and grazing area.
