Description

This three-hole coconut comes with live moss already growing across it, creating an instant aquascape piece that doubles as a refuge for shrimp, fry, and small fish. Place it in the tank and it's immediately at work — the moss provides a constant grazing surface for shrimp, and the three holes offer shelter that fish are drawn to instinctively.

The moss is a slow grower but very low maintenance, tolerating a wide range of water conditions and light levels with no CO2 needed. In a shrimp tank it practically looks after itself: shrimp keep the surface clean by grazing on algae and detritus, which in turn encourages healthy moss growth. It can also be trimmed with scissors to keep the shape tidy.

Approx dimensions 10 x 5cm.

This moss-covered coconut shelter provides both decoration and functionality for aquariums. Customers said "shrimp love it" and fish use it for hiding. The moss arrives healthy and shows growth within days. Some noted moss can detach with curious fish, and a few received sparse coverage initially, though it typically recovers and thrives with time.

Pleasant experience

While I empathise with the other person who reviewed the 3 hole coconut and had received a pretty poor condition nut. I on the other had received an exceptionally healthy hunk of moss on mine.

I already had a 1 hole coconut and coconut arch in my tank, as well as well as some moss scaper pads. My shrimp much prefer the species of moss attached to the 3 hole coconut over the other kind of moss attached to the other coconuts.

The moss on my 3 hole is very vibrant, healthy green. It came fully intact and all green, stuck to the coconut.

My red crystal shrimp are in love. The adults and babies graze upon the moss as it is good at catching detritus from the water column. They keep the moss clean and this allows it grow more.

The shrimp don't spend much time inside the coconut, just on the moss. My corydoras catfish however, absolutely love all of the coconuts and use them as a safe refuge to rest for a short while.

Nice

I purchased one of these via eBay and have been asked to leave a review. I like it but it arrived in a bit of a sorry state. There was a lot of brown dying moss but it has over the time I've had it bounced back slowly with the added carbon in my aquarium. I have noticed some odd random little growths that have also now made their way into the substrate which only came from this item as my tank wasn't planted before. I'm not sure what these new tiny plants are but hopefully not something unwanted.

It arrived in great condition and the shrimps were on it in minutes, however 2 weeks on the moss is starting to break off and looks like its breaking down, I do run o2 and feed heavy due to the numbers of other live plants so not sure if thats the issue.

Pleased with this purchase. Seems pricey at first but when you consider it is a plant and decor/cave in one item it is actually very reasonable. Been in my small new tank for a week and seems to be doing well, already showing signs of growth. Great addition to a small tank as it does 2 jobs in one. A few very small pieces of the moss floated off when I was arranging it in the tank but I was happy to just let them settle and see what happens.

A lot smaller than I thought it would be. A lot of the moss ends up in my filter inlet but I think that's due to my clown loaches having a nibble. My baby pleco loves hiding in here.

Love these. Have bought five now for two of my tanks. Very compact growth, unlike some of the mosses I've bought which have grown in a candy-floss fashion.

This product looked a bit flat on receipt but soon perked up and growth has been good. However, the carpet of moss has lost definition after numerous "inspections" by tank occupants! I've managed to reattach the moss by means of a hairnet, but it's definitely not as aesthetically pleasing as it used to be.

In arrival it looked a little bare but after a few weeks the moss is growing nicely. Perhaps a bit pricey, however it does take the hassle out of trying to create something like this yourself.

Product FAQs

Helpful details before you buy.

Is it safe for shrimp?

Yes — this is one of the best products for shrimp tanks. Shrimp graze on the moss constantly and use the coconut holes as shelter. Particularly popular in breeding setups.

Will the moss grow over time?

Yes, slowly. It responds well to regular fertilisation and moderate light, gradually spreading across and beyond the coconut. Trim with scissors to keep the shape.

Does it need CO2 or special lighting?

Neither. Moss is one of the most adaptable plants in the hobby and will grow under basic aquarium lighting with no CO2 supplementation.

Will it sink?

Yes — the coconut is dense enough to sink straight away. No anchoring or weighting needed.

What type of moss is it?

The coconut is grown with live aquarium moss. The exact species can vary by season and stock, but it is always a low-maintenance variety suited to aquarium conditions.
