Description

Monosolenium tenerum, commonly known as Pelia or liverwort, is a freshwater liverwort rather than a true aquatic plant — one of the more unusual and visually distinctive species available in the planted tank hobby. It grows in flattened, lobed thalli with a fresh mid-green colour and a slightly glossy surface, producing a texture and form entirely unlike conventional aquarium mosses or stem plants. This version comes pre-established on a piece of natural lava rock, ready to place without any additional preparation.

Monosolenium is an easy and adaptable species. It grows in low to medium light without CO2 injection and tolerates a broad range of water parameters. It attaches naturally to hard surfaces — rock, wood, and substrate — via small holdfast structures. Growth is slow but steady, and the plant gradually extends its coverage across the lava rock surface over time.

The liverwort is pre-established on the lava rock so no further attachment is needed — simply rinse and place in the aquarium. The lava rock sinks immediately. Suited to aquariums of 20 litres and above and popular in natural aquascapes and shrimp tanks where its unusual texture makes it a distinctive and low-maintenance feature.

Plant Sizes

The image of the plant you'll be receiving is just an example of what you can expect. Each plant is unique and may vary in size and shape, so it won't be an exact match to the photo. If we provide a size guide, keep in mind that it's just an estimate and that plants can vary in size depending on the time of year.

Product FAQs

Helpful details before you buy.

What is the difference between Monosolenium and aquarium moss?

Monosolenium is a liverwort, not a moss — it has flat, lobed thalli rather than leaf-like moss stems. Its texture and appearance are quite different, making it a distinctive alternative.

Does it need CO2?

No — it grows in low to medium light without CO2 injection and is tolerant of a wide range of water conditions.

Do I need to attach it to anything?

No — it is pre-established on lava rock. Just rinse and place in the aquarium. It will continue to attach and spread naturally.

Is it suitable for shrimp tanks?

Yes — it is shrimp-safe and shrimp enjoy grazing on the biofilm that forms on its surface. The lava rock provides additional shelter.

Will it spread beyond the lava rock?

Yes, slowly. Monosolenium spreads by attaching to adjacent hard surfaces over time — it may creep onto nearby rock or substrate.
