Description

Anubias barteri 'Kirin' is a cultivated variant of Anubias nana with a striking distinguishing feature: the edges of its small, ovate leaves are strongly wavy and undulating, giving each leaf an almost dragon-like rippled texture. The name 'Kirin' references the dragon of Asian mythology. Leaves measure approximately 3–4cm, similar in size to standard nana.

Care requirements are identical to all Anubias: low light, no CO2, and attached to wood or rock rather than buried in substrate. Growth is slow, but the unusual leaf texture makes it a standout specimen in a planted layout — particularly effective alongside the smoother-leaved standard Anubias varieties.

Remove from the pot and attach the rhizome to hardscape with thread or aquarium-safe superglue. Do not bury the rhizome.

Product FAQs

Helpful details before you buy.

What makes Anubias nana Kirin different from standard Anubias nana?

The leaf edges are strongly wavy and undulating rather than smooth, giving each leaf a distinctive rippled texture. The name Kirin references an Asian dragon.

Does Anubias Kirin need CO2?

No — it has the same undemanding care profile as all Anubias varieties. No CO2 required, low light tolerant.

How do I plant Anubias Kirin?

Attach the rhizome to wood or rock using thread or aquarium-safe superglue. Do not bury the rhizome in substrate — this causes rot.

How big do the leaves get?

Approximately 3–4cm — similar in size to standard Anubias nana.

Is Anubias Kirin suitable for beginners?

Yes. Despite the unusual appearance, care requirements are identical to standard nana varieties — one of the most beginner-friendly plants available.
