Description

Microsorum pteropus Latifolia is a broad-leaved form of Java fern with wider, more oval leaves compared to the standard narrow-lanced form, giving it a fuller and lushier appearance when attached to driftwood or rock. The broader leaf surface and darker green colouration make it a visually substantial and attractive addition to aquariums where a more solid-textured epiphytic plant is desired.

It grows exactly as all Java fern varieties do β€” attached to hardscape with the rhizome exposed, in low to medium light without CO2 injection. It is extremely tolerant of a wide range of water conditions and temperature ranges, making it one of the most adaptable aquarium plants available. Once established it is very low maintenance and long-lived.

Supplied as an established potted plant, Microsorum pteropus Latifolia suits aquariums from 50 litres upward. The broader leaf form makes it a useful companion to narrower-leaved epiphytic plants and a versatile choice for driftwood and natural rock layouts at any experience level.

Product FAQs

Helpful details before you buy.

How does Latifolia differ from standard Java fern?

Latifolia has distinctly broader, more oval leaves compared to the narrow lance-shaped leaves of the standard form, giving it a fuller, denser appearance on driftwood.

How do I grow it?

Attach the rhizome to wood or rock using fishing line, thread, or aquarium-safe glue. Do not bury the rhizome in the substrate. Roots anchor naturally over time.

Does it need CO2?

No. Like all Java fern varieties it is tolerant and easy-care, growing well in low to medium light without CO2 injection.

What aquarium size does it suit?

It works well in aquariums from 50 litres upward. Its broader leaves make it more visually substantial than the standard form and it suits larger pieces of driftwood particularly well.

Can I mix it with other Java fern varieties?

Yes. Mixing Latifolia with Narrow, Windelov, and standard forms on the same piece of driftwood creates excellent textural contrast and is a popular technique in natural aquascaping.
