Chladoflora mini moss balls are miniature spherical colonies of Aegagropila linnaei algae — each approximately 1 cm in diameter — that form naturally in lakes with circulating currents, which roll them into their distinctive round shape. This pack contains five mini balls, perfectly sized for nano aquariums, shrimp tanks, and foreground planting where standard-sized Marimo would be out of proportion.

Chladoflora is one of the most genuinely low-maintenance species in the aquarium hobby. It grows in low light without CO2 injection and tolerates a wide range of temperatures and water conditions. Shrimp graze on the surface biofilm actively. After transit the balls may float — a gentle squeeze underwater releases any trapped air and they will sink.

The five-piece set provides immediate foreground detail and natural variety in a small footprint. They can be scattered freely across the substrate, arranged in groups alongside rocks, or used to complement other hardscape elements. Roll them gently between the palms at each water change to maintain their spherical shape and ensure even light exposure.

    Information about growing mosses:

    1. Slow growing

Mosses are well known for being relaltively easy to grow. Due to the fact they are slow growing, it means demands are low. This means less light, less fertilisers and less care.

    2. Not too much light please

Because all mosses are slow growing, you can't force them to grow quicker. So brighter light and loads of CO2 won't turbo charge them - actually you'll just end up stressing them out. Whilst some will always grow faster than others, mosses take time to get to the stage you want them to be. Patience.

    3. Trimming is beneficial

Like all plants, mosses need trimming with a shaprt pair of scissors so don't hold back. Avoid them getting leggy, trim them to keep their shape and they will reward you with better growth which is a deeper green and dense.

    Product FAQs

    Helpful details before you buy.

How big are the mini moss balls?

Each mini Chladoflora moss ball is approximately 1 cm in diameter — perfectly sized for nano tanks, shrimp setups, and foreground aquascaping.

Do they need CO2 or special lighting?

No — Chladoflora is one of the few aquarium plants that requires neither CO2 injection nor specialist lighting. Genuinely low-maintenance.

Why are my moss balls floating?

This is common after transit. Give them a gentle squeeze underwater to release any trapped air, then roll between your palms to restore their round shape.

    Are they safe for shrimp?

Yes, fully. Shrimp love them — they graze on the surface constantly, making them both a food source and enrichment for your shrimp.

How do I keep them round?

Roll them gently between your palms at every water change. This maintains the spherical shape and ensures all sides receive even light exposure.
