Description

Cryptocoryne petchii is a compact, small-leaved crypt from Sri Lanka producing narrow, slightly ruffled olive-green to bronze-brown leaves. Its naturally small stature makes it well suited to foreground and midground positions in smaller aquariums where larger crypts would be out of scale. This version comes pre-established on a piece of lava rock, ready to place without any substrate planting needed.

C. petchii is one of the more compact and adaptable Cryptocoryne species. It grows in low to medium light without CO2 injection and tolerates a broad range of water parameters. Like all crypts it may experience melt when first moved to a new tank — old leaves die back but the plant regrows healthily from the root within a few weeks of settling.

The plant is pre-established on the lava rock so no further attachment or planting is needed — simply rinse and place in the aquarium. The lava rock sinks immediately and can be moved or repositioned as needed. Suited to aquariums of 20 litres and above, working particularly well in shrimp tanks, nano aquascapes, and as midground accents in planted layouts.

Plant Sizes

The image of the plant you'll be receiving is just an example of what you can expect. Each plant is unique and may vary in size and shape, so it won't be an exact match to the photo. If we provide a size guide, keep in mind that it's just an estimate and that plants can vary in size depending on the time of year.

Some noted leaves were "smaller than the photo" or had fewer leaves than expected. It works well under low light and is easy to reposition in aquariums.

"I'm used to having to cut the leaves of Crypts in my CO2 tanks and allowing them to re-grow to avoid the dreaded "Crypt melt". What a pleasant surprise when I plopped 2 of these into my large Cory family/ breeding tank to find that after 3 weeks that they're growing vigorously, despite the Corys' inquisitive and constantly browsing nature disturbing them.

Highly recommended."

Product FAQs

Helpful details before you buy.

How small does Cryptocoryne petchii stay?

C. petchii is one of the smaller crypt species, typically reaching 10–15 cm in height. Its compact form makes it well suited to midground positions in smaller aquariums.

Does it need CO2?

No — like most Cryptocoryne it grows in low to medium light without CO2 injection.

Will it melt when I put it in the tank?

Crypt melt is common when plants are moved to a new tank — old leaves die back but the roots stay healthy and regrowth follows within a few weeks.

Do I need to plant it in substrate?

No — the plant is pre-established on lava rock. Just rinse and place it wherever you want in the aquarium.

Is it suitable for shrimp tanks?

Yes, fully shrimp-safe. Shrimp will graze on the biofilm that forms on the leaves and the lava rock provides additional shelter.
