    Description

Hydrocotyle verticillata, commonly called whorled pennywort, produces small, circular coin-shaped leaves arranged in neat whorls around upright stems, giving it an immediately recognisable appearance unlike most other aquarium plants. This version comes pre-established on a decorative display base that holds the plant in position without substrate planting, making it simple to position anywhere in the tank.

It is an adaptable and relatively easy plant. It grows in low to medium light and does not strictly require CO2 injection, though supplementation encourages denser and more compact growth. It spreads by runners and can be used as a foreground carpet or allowed to grow into a free-form mid-height clump. Regular trimming maintains the desired shape and density.

The decorative base means no substrate planting is needed — simply place it wherever you want in the tank and move it as required. Suited to aquariums of 30 litres and above, it works particularly well as a foreground or midground accent plant and adds a distinctive round-leaved texture that contrasts well with finer or broader-leaved plants.

    Plant Sizes

The image of the plant you'll be receiving is just an example of what you can expect. Each plant is unique and may vary in size and shape, so it won't be an exact match to the photo. If we provide a size guide, keep in mind that it's just an estimate and that plants can vary in size depending on the time of year.

    Product FAQs

    Helpful details before you buy.

What makes the leaves look so distinctive?

The perfectly round, coin-shaped leaves arranged in whorls around vertical stems give Hydrocotyle verticillata an appearance unlike almost any other aquarium plant.

    Does it need CO2?

Not required, though CO2 encourages more compact, lush growth. It grows without it in low to medium light.

Does it need to be planted in substrate?

No — the decorative base holds it in position. You can place it anywhere in the tank without planting.

    Will it spread?

Yes — it produces runners and spreads naturally. Trim regularly to control spread and maintain the shape you want.

What tank size does it suit?

It works from 30 litres upward as a foreground or midground accent. The round leaves provide an interesting contrast to most other aquarium plants.
