Description

Aponogeton longiplumulosis is a relatively rare Madagascan bulb plant producing long, scalloped leaves with a decorative, lightly ruffled edge. Leaves can reach up to 60cm under the right conditions, making it a proper background plant for medium and large aquariums. These specimens are supplied with leaves already established, giving immediate visual presence on arrival.

Well suited to low-tech tanks: no CO2 required, tolerant of low to moderate light, easy to establish. Simply drop the bulb into the background substrate and it will anchor itself naturally. Like all Aponogeton, it goes through periodic dormancy cycles in which the leaves die back — leave the bulb in place and new growth resumes after a few weeks of rest. The scalloped leaf texture sets it apart from the bullated boivinianus and the smooth-leaved henkelianus.

A worthwhile addition for anyone building a collection of the large Madagascan Aponogeton species, and an uncommonly available plant in the UK hobby.

How does longiplumulosis differ from boivinianus or henkelianus?

Longiplumulosis has scalloped, decorative leaf edges. Boivinianus has bullated (heavily textured) broad leaves. Henkelianus has smooth, slim, bright green leaves. Each has a very different appearance.

Does it go dormant?

Yes — all Aponogeton go through natural dormancy periods when the leaves die back. Leave the bulb in place; new growth will resume after a few weeks.

How long can the leaves get?

Up to 60cm under good conditions — background-only positioning is essential.

Does it need CO2?

No — it grows well in low-tech conditions without CO2. Moderate light and a nutrient-rich substrate or root tabs support the best growth.

Is it commonly available?

No — longiplumulosis is one of the rarer Aponogeton species in the UK hobby. Availability is not guaranteed and it sells quickly when we have it.
