Description
Crinum calamistratum is a distinctive bulb plant from Cameroon producing unusually long, corkscrew-twisted, deeply crisped leaves that spiral elegantly and can reach up to 80cm in length. The twisted leaf form is one of the most architecturally interesting in the aquarium hobby — nothing else quite replicates it — and a well-established specimen becomes a genuine centrepiece in any larger tank.
Despite the dramatic appearance, care requirements are simple: low light, no CO2, and gentle water movement. For the most striking effect it works well as a solitary specimen rather than grouped with other large background plants. A healthy, well-established plant will occasionally produce flower stalks emerging from among the upper leaves.
Plant the bulb with only the lower portion in the substrate. It will anchor itself and establish over time.

This aquatic plant features distinctive crinkly leaves and a substantial bulb. Customers praised its excellent quality and healthy condition upon arrival. Fish enjoy swimming through the long leaves. Some noted it's "a bit smaller than expected" with occasional leaf loss. Most found it grows well in various tank setups, though it's "a slow grower" that benefits from proper nutrients.
- Fantastic crinkly leaves coming out of a substantial bulb. The texture is amazing!
- It's has the lushest, healthiest colour of all my tough plants
- I wanted a tall but thin plant, for the front of my aquarium... it looks great

Quality
Excellent quality.
I wanted a tall but thin plant, for the front of my aquarium, to squeeze between 2 ceramic urns. I also wanted a plant that my plecs wouldn’t destroy. I’ve put this in and it looks great, as do all plants from aqua essentials, a big thank you to Richard once again.
This looked little out of sorts on arrival . Could be the winter cold whilst in transit . The stems just all lay flat on the bottom of the tank. Now after 3 days they look a lot better and are now rising upwards . Looking like a good buy now.
I recently brought this plant for my aquarium and love it, my fish really seem to enjoy swimming amongst it. The plant arrived healthy, nicely packed and quick.
A little bit smaller than expected with only 4 stalks, one of which dropped off after a few hours jn the tank.
Love this one. Fantastic crinkly leaves coming out of a substantial bulb. The texture is amazing!
Bit pricey for the size of bulb that arrived, but several long healthy green leaves and well rooted bulb, and seems to have settled into my tank nicely. Haven't seen it cheaper/in my local stores so still worthwhile.
Ordered two of these. They are great quality plants and holding strong in my fancy goldfish tank who leave this plant alone. Have ordered plenty of plants from this company due to fantastic quality plants.
Great plant, well delivered and growing well
Crinum Calamistratum Good size . planted and showing good growth happy with this purchase
Very nice and its what I like
Lovely plant, it's doing very well in my fish tank. Prompt delivery and arrived well packed.
Very interesting green leaves being so fine, contrasting well with bronze and red wider leaved plants
Arrived a healthy-looking, well packaged plant and has settled in nicely. Looks happy and enhances my aquarium. Very pleased.
2 months in and its looking very well in my low tech aquarium. It's has the lushest, healthiest colour of all my tough plants and I'm very happy to report that it is totally unaffected by my skittish voraciously vegetarian Silver Dollars. It's unusual crinkles make it a good focal point plant. I use it at a pinch point between two different areas, so the fish swim through/past it like a doorway.
Extremely quick delivery, well packaged and plant in lovely condition. Will definitely shop with you again.
I love this plant. It contrasts really well with other plants in my aquarium and gives a jungle feel. It has remained very healthy and the fish love swimming between the long tendrils.
Lovely condition. Well established roots. Looks great in the tank
Arrived healthy and in top condition. A month later it is showing signs of growth. These are slow growers. Cut roots back and use high light, Co2 and a root tab. Good seller and quick delivery
Great plant, sure I can see it growing everyday.
Very healthy plant, in the last fortnight the original leaves have doubled in length and new leaves are growing.
It is close to a strong current but does not seem to mind.
The leaves are particularly attractive.
this plant looks amazing especially since the leaves get blown around by the return of my filter the fish love it and so do i
I bought this plant a couple of weeks ago, and already its\' leaves appear to be lengthening. It\'s a very interesting and unusual looking plant, but one that adds a deal of interest at the front of the aquarium.
arrived healthy with plenty of leaves already starting to grow. placed it near my filter outlet and its wonderful watching my neons swin throught the long leaves. highly recommend to anyone looking for a plant with long leaves.
A great healthy plant and looks good in the aquarium straight away. Also, very fast delivery.
I've been wanting an opportunity to purchase this plant for some time now. Within 24 hours of recieving the 'back in stock' email it was sitting in my hands. The packaging was superb (as always) and the plant has an abundance of roots, shoots and leaves. I couldn't be happier with the service AE provide
Excellent plant, it has been a week and she is already started growing roots and leaves.
Great feature plant seems to have taken really well
Already had this plant in one tank. Had a job to find another, til this site. Very healthy.
Amazing plant, extremely unique and a real addition to my tank. Perfect condition and packaging and a nice size to start with. Planted it properly and within a day or 2 (with added nutrients) already they have started growing new stems, definitely worth the wait for. AS always 5star service from AE
Product FAQs
Helpful details before you buy.
How long do the leaves grow?
In good conditions the leaves can reach up to 80cm — background positioning is essential in most aquariums.
Is the corkscrew leaf form normal?
Yes — the twisted, crisped leaves are the defining characteristic of this species. They are not a sign of nutrient deficiency or poor health.
Does it flower?
Yes — a healthy, established plant will produce flower stalks emerging from the centre of the plant.
Does it need CO2 or strong light?
No — it grows without CO2 and prefers moderate to low light.
How deep should I plant the bulb?
Only the lower portion of the bulb should be in the substrate. Plant it shallowly and it will anchor itself naturally over time.
