Description

Echinodorus purpurea is a compact ornamental sword plant prized for its rich purple-red leaf colouration. The rosette stays relatively small, making it an eye-catching splash of warm colour in the midground without the bulk of larger Echinodorus species.

This variety is easy to care for, growing well under medium light without CO2 injection. Leaf colour is most intense on younger growth and is enhanced by good lighting and an iron-rich substrate or liquid fertiliser. A nutritious planting medium supports the strong root system the plant relies on for most of its nutrients.

Supplied as an established potted plant, Echinodorus purpurea suits aquariums from 80 litres upward. Its vivid colouration and compact size make it a popular choice for hobbyists who want a bold, coloured Echinodorus without occupying a large footprint in the layout.

This looks SOOO much better in the flesh. It has amazing pattern with different colour greens which, with CO2 and medium light, are changing some of the leaves to a lovely light red colour now. With the patterns still there too.

Received very healthy plants. Leaves have green and brown flecks in equal amounts. At present new leaves are a more intense version of an Ozelot. Leaf shape is more slender also.
Made use of the 'out of stock' feature and was notified when they came back in. Great service.

A beautiful small echinodorus which adapted very quickly to being submersed. Leaves remain small and the plants are quite colourful. Growing well after a few weeks under medium light

Product FAQs

Helpful details before you buy.

How do I maintain the purple-red colouration?

Good medium light and a substrate or fertiliser rich in iron and micronutrients produce the most intense colour. New leaves always carry the deepest pigmentation.

Does it need CO2?

No. It grows well without added CO2, making it a good choice for low-tech planted aquariums.

How large does it grow?

It stays compact, typically reaching 15–25 cm in height, making it suitable for the midground of most planted aquariums.

Is it suitable for smaller tanks?

Yes. Its compact size makes it one of the more manageable coloured Echinodorus options for aquariums from 80 litres upward.

Will it lose colour if light levels are low?

Yes. Insufficient light will cause the plant to produce greener, less pigmented leaves. Maintain at least medium light for the best purple-red tones.
