Description
Echinodorus uruguayensis is a large sword plant from South America with distinctive narrow, ribbon-like leaves that ripple and sway gracefully in aquarium current. The long, elegant leaf form sets it apart from the broader-leafed Echinodorus species, giving it a light and airy quality while still providing substantial visual presence at the back of a planted aquarium.
It is an undemanding species, tolerating a wide range of water conditions and growing well under medium light without CO2 supplementation. Like all Echinodorus it relies heavily on its root system for nutrition, so planting in a nutrient-rich substrate or adding root tabs near the base gives the best results.
Supplied as an established potted plant, Echinodorus uruguayensis can reach 40–60 cm in height and suits aquariums of 200 litres or more. Used in the background, its rippling narrow leaves create a striking contrast against broader-leafed plants and add movement and flow to the planted composition.

How does Echinodorus uruguayensis differ from other large sword plants?
Its leaves are notably narrow and ribbon-like compared to the broad oval leaves of most Echinodorus. They ripple and sway in flow, giving the plant a lighter, more graceful appearance.
Does it need CO2?
No. It grows well under medium light without CO2 injection, drawing nutrition primarily from the substrate.
How large does it grow?
It can reach 40–60 cm in height in a mature aquarium, making it best suited to large aquariums of 200 litres or more.
How do I plant it?
Remove the rock wool from the roots and plant in a nutrient-rich substrate, leaving a few centimetres of space around the base for the rosette to spread.
Does it produce runners?
Yes. Mature plants produce flowering stems or side shoots that can be removed and replanted once they have developed a small root system.
