Description
Microsorum pteropus Green is a vibrant, lush-coloured form of Java fern with bright emerald-green leaves that are slightly more vivid in tone than the standard form. Like all Java fern varieties, it grows attached to wood or rock rather than being planted in the substrate, making it a versatile and distinctive plant for creating a natural, hardscape-integrated look in planted aquariums.
It grows well in low to medium light without CO2 injection, tolerating a wide range of water conditions. The rhizome must remain exposed and not buried — attach it to hardscape using thread, fishing line, or aquarium-safe glue and the roots will anchor naturally over time. It is slow to moderate in growth rate and requires minimal maintenance once established.

How does Microsorum pteropus Green differ from standard Java fern?
The Green form has a noticeably more vivid, bright emerald-green colouration compared to the slightly darker or more muted tone of the standard form. Growth habit and care are essentially the same.
How do I attach it to wood or rock?
Do not bury the rhizome. Attach it using fishing line, cotton thread, or aquarium-safe superglue. The roots will grip the surface naturally within a few weeks.
Does it need CO2?
No. It grows well without CO2 in low to medium light, making it suitable for low-tech and community aquariums.
Is it safe with herbivorous fish?
Yes. Java fern is generally unpalatable to most fish including plant-eaters, making it a good option for cichlid tanks and set-ups where other plants get eaten.
How does it propagate?
Tiny plantlets grow on the edges of older leaves and eventually detach and anchor themselves nearby. It propagates naturally without any effort from the hobbyist.
