    Description

Vallisneria giganthea Rubra is the red-bronze form of giant Vallisneria, producing very long, broad ribbon-like leaves that develop warm reddish-bronze to olive-red tones alongside bright green, creating a more colourful and visually dramatic background than the all-green standard giganthea form. Under good light the red tones are most pronounced on newer growth.

It shares the same easy, tolerant nature as all Vallisneria varieties — growing without CO2 in low to medium light and tolerating a wide range of water conditions including hard and alkaline water. It is a vigorous grower and spreads by runners to form an impressive colony of tall, coloured leaves across the background of a large aquarium.

Best suited to large aquariums from 150 litres upward, Vallisneria giganthea Rubra creates one of the most striking large-scale background effects available in the freshwater hobby. The combination of giant leaf length and warm reddish colouration makes it a dramatic and unusual choice for hobbyists wanting a statement background plant in a well-established larger aquarium.

    Product FAQs

    Helpful details before you buy.

What colour are the leaves of Vallisneria giganthea Rubra?

The leaves are mostly bright green with warm reddish-bronze to olive-red tones that are most noticeable on newer growth, particularly under good light.

Is it easy to care for?

Yes. Like all Vallisneria it is easy and tolerant — no CO2 required, adapts to a range of water conditions including hard water, and grows under low light.

    How large does it grow?

As a giganthea form, leaves can reach over a metre in length. It is suited to large aquariums from 150 litres upward with sufficient tank height.

    Does it need CO2?

No. It grows reliably without CO2 injection, making it a practical giant background plant for low-tech large aquariums.

    How does it spread?

Via runners that produce daughter plants along the substrate. It can fill a large tank background over time and should be thinned regularly to manage spread.
