    Description

Vallisneria torta is a distinctive Vallisneria variety producing ribbon-like leaves with a pronounced spiral or corkscrew twist along their length, giving it a more ornamental and unusual appearance compared to the straighter forms. The twisted leaves catch light from different angles as they move in the current, creating a more visually dynamic background effect than standard straight-leaved Vallisneria species.

It is as easy and tolerant as all Vallisneria varieties, growing without CO2 in low to medium light and adapting to a wide range of water conditions including hard and alkaline water. It spreads via runners to gradually fill the background with a colony of distinctively twisted leaves. Daughter plants can be thinned and replanted to control the spread and maintain the desired density.

Supplied as a bunch ready to plant, Vallisneria torta suits aquariums from 40 litres upward. Its distinctive corkscrew leaf twist, easy care, and graceful movement in the current make it a popular choice for hobbyists wanting a more ornamental background grass plant than standard spiralis while retaining all the benefits of the Vallisneria genus.

Vallisneria torta Bunch (mini twisted vallis) - Aqua Essentials

Customers praised the aquatic plants for "excellent condition" and "fantastic quality" with healthy roots and good growth. Most arrived "well packaged" with quick delivery. However, some shoppers noted brown leaves upon arrival and occasional rooting issues. A few plants melted or had minimal roots, though many recovered over time.

    • These plants arrive in excellent condition, fantastic quality. Growing really well in my tank.
    • Good height plants and already solid roots, great colour and a generous amount in a bunch
    • Good quality plants. Some newer leaves have grown. 100% recommend!

Bought these for my goldfish and now that they've had weeks to settle in, I can confirm they are good quality plants. I've only had a few tips turn yellow after two weeks, but some of the smaller newer leaves have grown. 100% recommend!

Bought 2 qty, I believe they were potentially last 2 in stock.
Plant arrived in OK condition - most of the roots only had 1 leave to them.
In fairness was given about 8 - 10 plantable bits.
A few have uprooted / died, but others looking OK-ish.
    Would & will order again.

The ones I bought looked very sad and with very little roots, now planted but swept out by the filter current so floating again. All the other plants in the batch look pretty good but not the valis, I will give them a while but I will be surprised if they make it.

    Product FAQs

    Helpful details before you buy.

What makes Vallisneria torta different from other Vallisneria?

Its leaves have a pronounced spiral or corkscrew twist along their length that is more pronounced than the gentle twist of asiatica, giving it a more ornamental and distinctive appearance.

Is it easy to care for?

Yes. It is as easy and tolerant as all Vallisneria varieties — no CO2, low light, adaptable to hard water conditions. Ideal for beginners and low-tech aquariums.

    Does it need CO2?

No. It grows without CO2 in low to medium light and is one of the most low-maintenance background plants available.

    Is it hard water tolerant?

Yes. Like all Vallisneria it is among the most hard-water-tolerant of aquarium plants.

    How does it spread?

Via runners that produce daughter plants along the substrate. It gradually fills the background over time. Thin runners and replant daughter plants as needed to maintain a tidy group.
