Description

Anubias barteri var. barteri is the larger of the commonly available Anubias barteri varieties, producing broad, tough leaves on a creeping rhizome that can reach 25–45cm in height. The leaf shape varies between individual plants, but all share the characteristic deep green waxy texture the genus is known for.

It is as undemanding as any Anubias: no CO2, tolerant of low light, and attached to wood or rock rather than planted into substrate. Even herbivorous fish leave the extremely tough leaves completely alone, making it one of the few plants that holds up well in cichlid aquariums. Growth is slow but reliable.

Remove from the pot and attach the rhizome to hardscape using thread or aquarium-safe superglue. Do not bury the rhizome.

Product FAQs

Helpful details before you buy.

How does Anubias barteri var. barteri differ from var. nana?

Barteri grows significantly larger — 25–45cm tall compared to nana's 4–10cm. The leaves are broader and tougher. Same care requirements, just more visual presence.

Does it need CO2?

No — it grows well without CO2, making it ideal for low-tech and beginner setups.

Where should I place it?

Midground to background depending on tank size. The large leaves provide excellent cover for fish that appreciate shelter.

Is it suitable for cichlid tanks?

Yes — the very tough, robust leaves resist even herbivorous fish. One of the few plants that holds up well in cichlid aquariums.

How do I plant it?

Attach the rhizome to wood or rock — never bury it. Thread or aquarium-safe superglue both work well.
