Description
Aponogeton boivinianus is one of the largest and most impressive of the Aponogeton species, producing broad, dark green lance-shaped leaves with a distinctively corrugated, bubbled surface texture. The leaves can reach over 60 cm in length and are among the most dramatic of any aquarium plant — a mature specimen in a large aquarium creates an imposing, large-scale planted background that few other plants can match.
It grows in low to medium light without CO2 injection and does best in a nutrient-rich substrate. Like all Aponogeton it goes through natural dormancy cycles when the leaves die back and the bulb rests before regrowing — this is completely normal and the plant often returns even stronger after each rest period. It suits large aquariums of 150 litres and above where there is room for its extensive spread.
Supplied as a dormant bulb. Plant in a nutrient-rich substrate leaving the top third of the bulb above the surface — do not bury it completely. Allow several weeks for growth to begin as the bulb comes out of dormancy. The dramatic corrugated leaves that follow are well worth the wait.

Customers praised rapid growth, with many reporting shoots appearing within days and leaves growing 1-2cm daily. Most bulbs arrived healthy and well-packaged. Some noted the attractive wavy dark green leaves. However, a few bulbs failed to sprout or struggled to anchor. Customers appreciated the plant's ability to thrive even in low-light conditions.
- Both bulbs arrived safe and happy, settled in well and immediately started growing at about 1cm per day.
- After a day we had a small leaf now 2 weeks on we have many large leaves!
- Large bulb that started to sprout next day with a 2" growth. Highly recommended.

OMG best purchase ever! After a day we had a small leaf now 2 weeks on we have many large leaves along with shoots on their way! AMAZING
Three weeks in & no growth.
Growing well at the moment.
Bought a couple, one sprouted overnight & is doing well, unfortunately just the one. The other hasn’t & as it’s been a while so I assume it’s dead.
Bulb,no leaves. Day three in my tank it has approx 5cm growth
I have a little tank with a couple of shrimp. I haven't got much light and things (aside from moss) often struggle to live, let alone grow! Imagine my surprise that this bulb is actually doing something!!! Tough thing, can hardly believe it!
Quality product with rapid delivery.
Growing ok
Love it!
Started growing as soon as I planted it. Has been in a three weeks now and leaves are 10/ 15 cm or so - so very fast growing. Really pleased and looking forward to seeing if the leaves will get to the top of the tank. Will buy more!
The bulb was in a healthy condition when received although I was a little concerned by how cold it was given it had been sat in the Post Office sorting depot all weekend. I placed the bulb in my tank on Monday evening, it had just 2 shoot tips peeking through. Come Thursday evening there were 6 shoots clearly visible, the largest being approximately 6cms long, so it is growing at a rate of 2cms per day. So far very impressed, will see how it continues to develop over the next month before deciding on whether or not to get any more.
The bulb is growing away well with several leaves sprouting.
Well packaged. Arrived promptly. Settled in well. Thriving and makes the tank look much nicer. Really pleased.
Good quality bulb as yet has not sprouted so cannot give review on the plant.
Really lovely addition to the aquarium this plant. It is quite unlike any of the other plants that you can grow. The leaves are an attractive wavy dark green and it contrasts well with amazon sword and more familiar plants.
The bulb of one of the three purchased absolutely refused to stand in the upright position but in the end I let it do its own thing and it looks just as good. They took about three weeks to really get going but once they did well worth it. Really love it.
Both bulbs arrived safe and happy, settled in well and immediately started growing at about 1cm per day.
growing well
Good roots hopefully will produce a nice plant.
Yet another good plant from aqua essentials perfect in front of the big filter i have and has a great looking effect waving around it got established in no time and is growing a treat cant fault it
Again another good plant from aquaessentials which i have placed in front of my filter it has already established itself and is growing very quickly and will look very effective when fully grown moving around with the filter and as i have white cloud mountain minnows they just love it again good value for money and very quick delivery and very well packed the plants were very well protected you can\'t ask for more than that
Started producing leaves within two days - excellent.
I judged this plant too early. Once it did stay still it grew amazingly fast and it looks great
oh now i see with or without leaves!! please delete other review justt sent. im still not happy but only with myself for not searching proper wen brought
not happy as didnt realise i was buying ball bulbs with no plant matter, wanted quick fix for bare tank iv taken too llong to replant, i know you say grows quick but ill doubt these will even show any growth as my tank dont keep plants well even java fern will turn black and die off.
If had known i would of got some differnt already fully grown plants...ill change review if i get results tho
A scruffy looking plant that wouldn\'t stay still in tank
good service and bulbs of good quality
Arrived very quickly, but bulbs have not produced any shoots.
Excellent service, ordered Friday morning received Saturday. Large bulb that started to sprout next day with a 2" growth. A week later bulb has 4 leaves and is growing strongly. Highly recommended.
I have to chuckle. I ordered this and it arrived, and I placed it where I wanted it in the tank. Within days it started to sprout proper leaves and I was like "that aint no nymphea". Then I checked and realised I had ordered an Aponogeton. Im glad I did, as its growing at the rate of 1.5cm a day pretty much. Excellent quality.
I have recently purchased two Aponegrton Boivinianus plants yogrther with two Aponegrton Crisppus Erd and two Echinodorus Radican plants. the delivery was prompt, rhe packaging was good and the plants were exclant. they have been in my aquarium a week now and all plants are producing new leaves together with good general grwth.
I am very pleased with this order and have already placed another.
Common Questions
How do I plant the bulb?
Plant in substrate leaving the top third of the bulb above the surface. Never bury it completely — this causes rot.
How long before it starts growing?
It can take several weeks after planting for growth to begin as the bulb comes out of dormancy. Keep conditions stable and allow it time.
What is Aponogeton dormancy?
All Aponogeton go through natural rest cycles when leaves die back and the bulb sits dormant. This is normal — leave the bulb in place and it will regrow.
How large does it get?
The leaves can reach 60 cm and above in ideal conditions. This is a large plant suited to aquariums of 150 litres and above.
Does it need CO2?
No — it grows in low to medium light without CO2 injection. A nutrient-rich substrate is more important than CO2 for this species.
