Description

Cyperus helferi is a sedge — not a true aquarium plant in the conventional sense, but one that grows beautifully fully submerged, producing long, narrow, arching grass-like leaves that move gracefully in the current. It can reach 30–50cm in height and creates a distinctly different texture from broad-leaved plants, adding a naturalistic, meadow-like quality to aquascapes.

It is more demanding than most aquarium plants: medium to high light and CO2 are strongly recommended for good growth. A nutrient-rich substrate is important. Without adequate light and CO2, growth is poor and the plant gradually declines. It is not suited to low-tech setups.

Plant in the substrate in the background. It doesn't spread via runners but can produce adventitious plants on the long leaves. Best used as a specimen background plant rather than a carpeting or colonising plant.

Product FAQs

Helpful details before you buy.

Is Cyperus helferi difficult to grow?

More demanding than most aquarium plants — it requires medium to high light and CO2. Not suitable for low-tech aquariums. In the right conditions it is very rewarding.

Does it need CO2?

Yes — CO2 is strongly recommended. Without it the plant typically declines over time.

How tall does it get?

30–50cm in good conditions — a proper background plant for medium to large aquariums.

How do I propagate it?

Adventitious plants can develop on the long leaves. These can be removed once they have developed their own roots.

Is it a true aquatic plant?

It's a sedge from Thailand that grows well fully submerged. Technically a marsh plant that performs beautifully underwater with the right conditions.
