Description

Echinodorus ducumbens is an unusual low-growing sword plant that creeps along the substrate rather than growing upright β€” producing leaves on long horizontal stolons that spread across the bottom of the aquarium rather than shooting toward the surface. The growth habit creates a sprawling, carpeting effect that's unique among the Echinodorus genus.

Medium light, no CO2 required, planted in substrate with root tabs. The horizontal growth means it can cover significant ground over time β€” plan for this when deciding where to position it. Growth rate is moderate.

Plant in the foreground to midground. Allow space for the plant to spread laterally. Propagation via the runners and daughter plants it produces naturally.

Product FAQs

Helpful details before you buy.

How is ducumbens different from other swords?

It grows horizontally along the substrate rather than upright β€” producing runners that spread the plant laterally like a ground cover rather than shooting toward the surface.

Does it need CO2?

No β€” grows without CO2. Root tabs near the roots support the best growth.

How much space does it need?

It can spread significantly over time via horizontal runners. Plan for a creeping ground-cover habit rather than a single specimen.

Where should I position it?

Foreground to midground β€” the horizontal growth habit and low profile are best suited to front or centre of the tank.

How do I propagate it?

It propagates naturally via runners. Allow the runners to develop, then separate and replant the daughter plants.
