Description

Echinodorus tricolour is a highly decorative sword plant cultivar prized for displaying three distinct colours within a single rosette. New leaves emerge in shades of cream and white with green and red markings, transitioning through various combinations of these tones as they mature. No two leaves look identical, making each plant a naturally varied composition of colour.

Despite its ornamental appearance, it is easy to keep. Medium light and no CO2 injection are sufficient, though the colour complexity is most vivid under good light and with an iron-rich substrate or fertiliser that supports the pigmentation in the leaf tissue.

Supplied as an established potted plant, Echinodorus tricolour typically reaches 20–30 cm and suits the midground of aquariums from 100 litres upward. Its unique multi-toned foliage makes it a natural focal point in any planted layout, particularly alongside plainer green plants that allow the distinctive colouring to stand out.

Product FAQs

Helpful details before you buy.

What colours appear on Echinodorus tricolour?

Leaves display a combination of cream or white, green, and red markings simultaneously. The exact pattern varies between individual leaves, so the rosette always has a naturally diverse, multi-toned look.

Does it need CO2?

No. It grows well without CO2 injection. An iron-rich substrate or liquid fertiliser helps maintain the most vivid colour on new and developing leaves.

How large does it grow?

It typically reaches 20–30 cm in height, making it a suitable midground plant for aquariums from 100 litres upward.

Will the colours fade over time?

Older leaves become more uniformly green as they mature, but the plant continuously produces new tricoloured leaves, maintaining the distinctive look throughout the rosette.

Is it suitable for beginners?

Yes. Despite its striking appearance, Echinodorus tricolour is no more demanding than standard green sword plants and is a good choice for hobbyists of all experience levels.
