Description

Eleocharis parvula (dwarf hairgrass) is pre-grown on a 15 x 9 cm mesh pad, creating a ready-made hairgrass mat that delivers the classic fine-bladed grass carpet look in the aquarium foreground without any germination or establishment period. The fine, bright green blades produce one of the most popular foreground styles in planted aquascaping — immediately installed, immediately effective.

Hairgrass grows at its best in medium to bright light with CO2 supplementation, which produces dense, compact growth close to the substrate. Without CO2 it can still be grown but spreads more slowly and may grow a little taller. Regular trimming encourages lateral spreading and keeps the carpet neat and low. Good fertilisation supports healthy, vibrant colour.

The hairgrass is pre-established on the mesh pad so it is ready to place immediately — trim to size if needed, then press the pad gently into the substrate so the mesh is covered and held in place. The grass roots through the mesh and into the substrate naturally over the first few weeks. Suited to aquariums of 30 litres and above with medium to bright lighting.

Common Questions

Do I need CO2 for hairgrass to carpet?

CO2 significantly helps — it produces denser, more compact growth close to the substrate. Without it the hairgrass grows but may be sparser and taller. Medium to bright light is also important.

How do I install the mesh pad?

Trim to the size you need, then press it gently into the substrate so the mesh is held in place. The grass roots through the mesh into the substrate naturally.

Can I cut the pad to fit my tank?

Yes — the mesh pad can be cut to any shape or size with scissors to fit your foreground area.

How do I keep the carpet neat?

Trim regularly with aquascaping scissors — a neat, low carpet is achieved by consistent trimming which also encourages the grass to spread laterally.

What lighting does it need?

Medium to bright lighting gives the best results. Hairgrass is more demanding on light than many other aquarium plants.
