    Description

Glossostigma elatinoides is one of the finest foreground carpeting plants in the aquarium hobby, producing tiny, spoon-shaped leaves that hug the substrate in an immaculate low carpet. Native to New Zealand, it is a plant most commonly seen in meticulously maintained nature aquarium layouts and aquascaping competition tanks where a refined, seamless foreground is central to the design.

It is a demanding species that requires bright light and CO2 injection to form the dense, compact carpet it is known for. Under inadequate light it grows upward rather than laterally, losing the flat carpeting habit that makes it desirable. A nutrient-rich substrate and stable water chemistry are important for long-term success.

Supplied as five established potted plants, Glossostigma elatinoides suits well-equipped high-tech aquariums from 60 litres upward. Planted in small portions across the foreground, it will gradually fill in to create one of the finest and most refined carpet effects achievable in a planted aquarium.

    Product FAQs

    Helpful details before you buy.

    Does Glossostigma elatinoides need CO2?

Yes. CO2 injection is essential for the compact carpeting growth this plant is known for. Without it, the plant will grow upward rather than spreading low across the substrate.

What light level does it need?

Bright light is required. Under medium or low light the plant fails to carpet and becomes leggy. It is one of the highest light-demanding carpeting plants available.

    Is it suitable for beginners?

No. It is one of the more demanding aquarium plants and is best suited to hobbyists who are experienced with high-tech, CO2-injected aquariums.

How do I plant it for a carpet effect?

Divide each pot into small portions and plant them 2–3 cm apart across the foreground. Under good light and CO2, the plant will spread laterally and fill in the gaps over several weeks.

Why is my Glossostigma growing upward instead of spreading?

This is caused by insufficient light. Glossostigma only carpets when light intensity is high enough to encourage lateral rather than vertical growth.
