    Description

Limnophila rugosa is a distinctive stem plant from Southeast Asia with whorls of toothed, textured leaves that display a slightly wrinkled or bumpy surface — the characteristic that gives the species its name. This unusual leaf texture, combined with a warm green to brownish-green colouration, sets it apart from other Limnophila species and makes it a sought-after plant for hobbyists who enjoy unusual botanical forms.

It grows best with medium light and CO2 supplementation, which help maintain compact, structured whorled growth. Without CO2 the plant can still be grown in a well-lit aquarium but may develop a looser, less defined habit over time. Regular liquid fertilisation and a nutritious substrate support steady, long-term growth.

Supplied as an established potted plant, Limnophila rugosa suits aquariums from 60 litres upward in the background. Its textured, whorled leaves add an unusual structural quality to the planted layout and pair particularly well with finer-leaved plants that complement its distinctive rougher form.

    Product FAQs

    Helpful details before you buy.

What does rugosa mean and how does it describe this plant?

Rugosa means wrinkled or rough in Latin. It refers to the slightly bumpy, textured surface of the leaves, which distinguishes this species from the smoother-leafed Limnophila varieties.

    Does it need CO2?

CO2 is recommended for compact, well-structured growth. Without it the plant can be grown in good light but tends to develop a looser, less defined whorled habit.

    Is it easy to keep?

It is manageable for hobbyists with medium light and ideally CO2. It is a step above the easiest stem plants but not overly difficult for someone with planted tank experience.

    Where should I position it?

The background is the most appropriate position, where its height and distinctive textured whorls can be seen and appreciated clearly.

    How do I propagate it?

Trim stems and replant cuttings. They root readily in the substrate and continue growing. Trimmed stems branch at the cut point, producing a progressively fuller plant.
