A set of two 3 cm Marimo moss balls — naturally occurring spherical colonies of Aegagropila linnaei algae (also sold as Chladoflora) with a dense, velvety dark green surface. The 3 cm size is compact enough for nano aquariums and shrimp tanks, and the pair can be placed together as a small natural grouping or separated to different areas of the layout for a more scattered, naturalistic effect.

Marimo is one of the most genuinely low-maintenance species available. It grows in low light without CO2 injection and tolerates a wide range of temperatures and water conditions. Shrimp actively graze on the surface biofilm and are naturally attracted to these balls. Roll them gently between the palms at each water change to maintain their spherical shape and ensure even light exposure.

Simply rinse and place in the aquarium — no planting or attachment needed. They sit naturally on the substrate. Suit aquariums from 10 litres upward. If they float after transit, a gentle squeeze underwater releases trapped air and they will sink to the substrate.

Information about growing mosses:

1. Slow growing

Mosses are well known for being relaltively easy to grow. Due to the fact they are slow growing, it means demands are low. This means less light, less fertilisers and less care.

2. Not too much light please

Because all mosses are slow growing, you can't force them to grow quicker. So brighter light and loads of CO2 won't turbo charge them - actually you'll just end up stressing them out. Whilst some will always grow faster than others, mosses take time to get to the stage you want them to be. Patience.

3. Trimming is beneficial

Like all plants, mosses need trimming with a shaprt pair of scissors so don't hold back. Avoid them getting leggy, trim them to keep their shape and they will reward you with better growth which is a deeper green and dense.

3cm aquatic moss balls that customers describe as "lush and green" and arriving in "excellent condition." Popular with shrimp and fish. Some shoppers noted smaller-than-expected size from photos. Most thrive in tanks, though one batch had brown patches. Important: one review reported zebra mussel contamination (industry-wide supply chain issue, not seller-specific). Overall great quality and fast delivery.

  • Arrived green and healthy and has already begun to grow a little in my tank. The shrimp love it.

Nice

Moss balls are just that.
Disappointed with size. Photo on website looked bigger than they were. But arrived in great condition. Hopefully they'll thrive in my tank

I'm pleased with the quality of the moss balls. They're a lovely addition to the tank. Unfortunately however not the best idea to put them in a tank with large goldfish. I'm growing them under pots from some of the other plants I ordered meantime.

MAJOR WARNING - Moss balls were infested with Zebra Mussels; an extremely invasive and destructive species. When released into waterways, they are practically impossible to remove and have a devastating effect on native ecosystems and infrastructure (check out issues caused in the US at the moment).

As per guidance, I've submitted a non-native incident report to the UK Centre for Ecology & Hydrology (CEH).

I must stress, this is not Aquaessentials fault, nor is it limited to Aquaessentials; infected moss balls are appearing for sale throughout the UK, EU & US. The fact they have managed to infest, then pass through an entire supply chain undetected gives testament to how resilient and pernicious Zebra Mussels are.

Everything about my purchase and delivery from Aquaessentials was positive - Would definitely use again for other aqua supplies.

I am a complete beginner with aquarium plants, and have set up my first planted tank. I knew from the beginning I wanted moss balls in my tank as I have a shrimp and heard they love them.
My tank is "hobbiton/ lord of the rings" themed and they fit in perfectly!

Looked great on arrival. But the clown loaches wedged them under some wood. Will have to try to get them out on the next water change!

Arrived well packaged, I didn’t realise these where so small but they will grow, apparently.

I ordered 3 as I have multiple tanks, one cold water and one tropical. So far so good.

Product FAQs

Helpful details before you buy.

How big is 3cm?

Each ball is 3 cm in diameter — roughly the size of a large marble. Compact enough for nano aquariums and effective in groups in larger tanks.

Do they need CO2 or special lighting?

No — Marimo grows in low light without CO2 injection. One of the most low-maintenance aquarium species available.

They're floating — what do I do?

Marimo can trap air after transit. A gentle squeeze underwater releases the air and they will sink to the substrate.

Are they safe for shrimp?

Yes, fully. Shrimp are highly attracted to Marimo and graze on the surface biofilm constantly.

How do I keep them round?

Roll them gently between your palms at each water change to maintain their spherical shape.
