Nymphaea stellata (star lotus) is a tropical water lily producing attractive leaves that range from plain green in some forms to deep red, purple, or heavily mottled varieties depending on the cultivar. This version is supplied with leaves already in active growth — you can see the plant before it arrives and it establishes more quickly in the aquarium than a dormant bulb. In an open-top tank the plant will eventually reach the surface and produce floating pads and star-shaped flowers.
It grows in medium light without CO2 injection and does best in a nutrient-rich substrate. Regular removal of floating leaves encourages denser submerged growth and keeps the plant in proportion with the rest of the aquarium. It is a vigorous grower in ideal conditions and can fill the background of a large tank substantially.
