Description

Samolus floribundes is an attractive Australian aquarium plant producing neat rosettes of spoon-shaped, bright green leaves with a smooth, slightly glossy surface. It has a restrained, compact growth habit that makes it well suited to the midground of planted aquariums, providing a tidy rosette form that contrasts effectively with both fine-textured stem plants and broader-leaved foreground species.

It is a moderately demanding plant that benefits from medium light and CO2 supplementation for the most compact, well-coloured growth. Without CO2 it can still be grown in good medium light but tends to grow more slowly and loosely. A nutritious substrate and regular liquid fertilisation support healthy root development and leaf production.

Supplied as an established potted plant, Samolus floribundes suits aquariums from 40 litres upward. Its neat rosette form, attractive leaf shape, and relatively uncommon provenance make it an interesting and distinctive midground plant for hobbyists wanting something a little different from the more widely available rosette species.

Product FAQs

Helpful details before you buy.

Is Samolus floribundes easy to care for?

It is a manageable plant for hobbyists with medium light. CO2 improves growth rate and compactness but is not strictly essential for basic cultivation.

Does it need CO2?

CO2 is recommended for the most compact, well-structured growth. Without it the plant can be grown in good medium light but may grow more slowly and less compactly.

Where should I position it in the aquarium?

The midground works well. Its compact rosette form and moderate height suit a position between foreground carpets and taller background stem plants.

Is it widely available?

It is less commonly found than many aquarium rosette plants, which adds to its appeal for hobbyists wanting a more distinctive or unusual species in their layout.

How does it grow?

It is a rosette-forming plant, growing as a compact cluster of leaves radiating from a central point rather than as an upright stem. Growth is moderate and manageable.
