Description

Taiwan moss (Taxiphyllum alternans) is a fine-textured aquarium moss with a slightly more open and feathery branching structure than standard Java moss. The smaller leaf size and airier growth form give it a lighter, more delicate appearance on hardscape — producing a more refined visual result than Java moss and creating an attractive layered effect when established on wood or rock surfaces in the aquarium.

Taiwan moss is easy and adaptable. It grows in low to medium light without CO2 injection and tolerates a wide range of water conditions. It attaches naturally to hard surfaces over time. Growth is slow to moderate and the open, feathery structure is maintained as it develops. Good water flow brings nutrients to the fronds and keeps the growth tidy.

Supplied as a portion in an 80cc cup. Attach to wood or rock using fine thread or aquarium-safe glue and allow several weeks to establish before removing the thread. Well suited to aquariums of 20 litres and above and particularly effective in shrimp tanks where its fine texture provides grazing surface, shelter for juvenile shrimp, and a surface for biofilm development.

Common Questions

How does Taiwan moss differ from Java moss?

Taiwan moss has a slightly more open, airier branching structure with smaller leaves, giving it a finer and more feathery appearance than standard Java moss.

Does it need CO2?

No — Taiwan moss grows in low to medium light without CO2 injection and suits low-tech aquariums.

How do I attach it to hardscape?

Attach portions to wood or rock using fine thread or aquarium-safe glue. Allow several weeks to establish before removing the thread.

Is it suitable for shrimp tanks?

Yes, fully. The fine texture is particularly attractive to shrimp for grazing and shelter.

How do I trim it?

Trim with scissors to keep growth compact and well-shaped. Regular light trimming maintains the attractive feathery appearance.
