Description
Amazon frogbit (Limnobium laevigatum) is a fast-growing floating plant from South America. The round, buoyant leaves sit on the surface while long feathery roots trail down into the water below — providing excellent cover for fry, shrimp, and small fish looking for shelter.
It grows quickly in good light and readily absorbs excess nutrients from the water column, naturally helping to control algae. The leaf size varies from 2–8cm depending on conditions and time of year. In a well-lit tank it will multiply rapidly via runners, so occasional thinning is needed if you have light-demanding plants lower in the aquarium.
Keep surface flow gentle — Amazon frogbit doesn't tolerate water splashing onto the leaves. This listing is for a portion of plants supplied in a small pot.

Customers praised the floating plant as healthy and well-packaged with "long roots that hang down giving an Amazon Jungle look." Most received plants in excellent condition that grew quickly. Some noted smaller-than-expected size and tiny roots initially, though plants recovered. One customer reported detached roots. Plants perform best in low-flow tanks.

Couldn’t be happier !!!!
Hi there, thank you for your feedback. Could you send us a picture of the portion when you received them please?
£25 for 4 very small bags of floating leaves that cover a 5 inch square. 1 week on half are brown/dead leaves even though I’ve used fertiliser to kick start them. Very disappointed.
Hi Richard, I’m sorry to hear you’re disappointed. We’re here to help—please contact us so we can assist you further with your frogbit. Thanks for your feedback.
Received in good condition as always.Frogbit was much smaller than I expected and reallt tiny roots but still a healthy plant.
The Amazon frogbit arrived well packed and in great condition, it has good root systems and the fish love it.
Plants were great
Gave it 2 star because the plants were alive but that's about it. The roots were packed in with the leaves but none of these were attached to the leaves/plant. Sent them an email but they just said the roots will grow back. Have bought from these in the past but won't bother again. Went to another shop and bought tropica plants which were a £1 cheaper and far better and healthy.
All my plants very promptly and in excellent condition.
The frogbit looks great in the tank , I love the long roots that hang down giving an "Amazon Jungle" look at the top of the tank,
Healthy looking plants delivered in great condition. My fish seem to eat them though, so they haven't lasted long.
Healthy and good plant
It's really nice and taken really well in my tank also the fish haven't eaten it which is a 1st , I love the way the roots hang in the water, be advised when it 1st goes in it doesn't look much but give it a couple of weeks it looks great
On receiving my plants some were a little yellow but now they have settled down they look well and I am very pleased with them.
Good plants arrived healthy amazing packaging for my order already after a couple of weeks seeing new growth and are starting to spread
Really love this little plant, and so do my shrimps they love hanging upside-down on them. I would recommend these plants for any aquarium
Nice sized portion and very healthy.
small portion but huge leaves and has quickly started propogating.
this plants gives a beautiful feature to my tank and they look like little water lilies as they float on the surface
Great portion of frogbit. All healthy too!
1st time I've used AE for plants. Limnobium arrived next day using standard delivery. Brilliant. The plant itself was fresh and very healthy looking, although a little smaller than expected. It will grow out though. very impressed indeed.
fast delivery, nice healthy plant
Lovely healthy plants well packaged and fast delivery. After only a couple of hours the roots had fanned out and my fish were seemingly enjoying swimming in amongst the new floating cover.
big portion
I really like this plant but it didn't do well in the tanks with a high water flow.
My gouramies liked it but the surface water in their tank has too much movement.
I moved it to a tank with a trickle filter and it is much happier.
We need cover in 155ltr cubed tank with lid. Would this be a suitable option. We are new to real plants and have ordered from you before. Looking forward to hearing your response.
Many thanks
Sally
No, we wouldn't recommend this plant with a tank with a closed lid as they will perish.
Hi,are these plants OK for an outside pond?
Yes, these are ok for a outside pond.
Common Questions
Does Amazon Frogbit need CO2?
No — it grows fast without CO2, absorbing it directly from the air above the waterline. CO2 supplementation would largely be wasted on a surface plant.
Will it block light to plants below?
Yes, once established it spreads quickly and can shade plants beneath it. Thin it out regularly if you have light-demanding plants lower in the tank.
Is Amazon Frogbit safe for shrimp and fry?
It's one of the best plants for shrimp and fry setups. The long trailing roots provide excellent shelter and shrimp graze on the biofilm that develops along the root strands.
Why are my frogbit leaves rotting?
Usually caused by water splashing onto the leaves or poor air circulation above the surface. Keep flow gentle and ensure good ventilation between the water and the lid.
Does it need feeding?
Not specifically — it absorbs nutrients from the water itself, helping reduce nitrates. In nutrient-poor tanks a diluted liquid fertiliser added to the water will improve growth and leaf colour.
