    Description

    Choose your pot size

    • Standard (5cm pot)
    • XL (14cm pot)

Both options are the same plant. XL is a larger supplied specimen. Pot diameter is not plant height; living plants vary naturally. One selected potted plant is included.

Microsorum pteropus Green is a vibrant, lush-coloured form of Java fern with bright emerald-green leaves that are slightly more vivid in tone than the standard form. Like all Java fern varieties, it grows attached to wood or rock rather than being planted in the substrate, making it a versatile and distinctive plant for creating a natural, hardscape-integrated look in planted aquariums.

It grows well in low to medium light without CO2 injection, tolerating a wide range of water conditions. The rhizome must remain exposed and not buried — attach it to hardscape using thread, fishing line, or aquarium-safe glue and the roots will anchor naturally over time. It is slow to moderate in growth rate and requires minimal maintenance once established.

Supplied as an established potted plant, Microsorum pteropus Green suits aquariums from 40 litres upward. Its bright green colouration, ease of care, and adaptability to hardscape attachment make it an attractive and practical option for wood and rock aquascape layouts at all levels of the hobby.

    XL size and care notes

Give your aquarium an established look from the start. This XL Java fern (Microsorum pteropus Green) is supplied in a 14cm pot, offering a larger specimen for adding greenery to wood or rock.

    • Easy to care for: suits low to medium light; no CO₂ injection required.
    • Simple to position: attach to wood or rock to create a natural focal point.
    • Low maintenance: slow growth means less frequent trimming.

What you receive: an XL potted Microsorum pteropus Green. Plant size, leaf shape and fullness vary naturally and seasonally; photographs show example specimens.

How to use your Microsorum pteropus Green

Gently remove the pot and growing medium, then secure the rhizome to wood or rock with thread or aquarium-safe glue. Keep the rhizome above the substrate rather than burying it. The roots will gradually attach to the surface.

    Care and growth

Provide low to medium light and allow time for the plant to settle. Remove older or damaged leaves as needed. Small plantlets may develop on mature leaves; once they have their own roots, they can be detached and attached elsewhere.

    Review

Possibly the largest plant I've ever received. Not convinced its not gonna come out of the tank and take over my apartment, starting to charge me rent. Absolutely gorgeous, loads of healthy leaves, love it. Only wish I had a bigger tank to show it off better, but its a lovely center piece to the tank and easy to build around.

    Product FAQs

    Helpful details before you buy.

What is the difference between the pot sizes?

Choose Standard (5cm pot) or XL (14cm pot). XL is a larger supplied specimen of the same plant. Pot diameter does not describe plant height.

How does Microsorum pteropus Green differ from standard Java fern?

The Green form has a noticeably more vivid, bright emerald-green colouration compared to the slightly darker or more muted tone of the standard form. Growth habit and care are essentially the same.

How do I attach it to wood or rock?

Do not bury the rhizome. Attach it using fishing line, cotton thread, or aquarium-safe superglue. The roots will grip the surface naturally within a few weeks.

    Does it need CO2?

No. It grows well without CO2 in low to medium light, making it suitable for low-tech and community aquariums.

Is it safe with herbivorous fish?

Yes. Java fern is generally unpalatable to most fish including plant-eaters, making it a good option for cichlid tanks and set-ups where other plants get eaten.

    How does it propagate?

Tiny plantlets grow on the edges of older leaves and eventually detach and anchor themselves nearby. It propagates naturally without any effort from the hobbyist.
