Description

Echinodorus argentinensis is one of the larger sword plant species, originating from Argentina and producing bold, broadly lance-shaped deep green leaves that can reach 40–50cm in height. The combination of leaf size and upright, spacious growth habit makes it a genuinely imposing background plant for large aquariums — impressive in scale without relying on unusual colour to stand out.

Medium light, no CO2 required, planted in substrate with root tabs. As one of the larger swords it benefits particularly from generous root fertilisation to support the leaf mass. Best suited to aquariums where there's space to allow the plant to spread naturally.

Plant in the background. Propagation via daughter plants on flower stems — detach once established with visible roots.

My South American tank which is predominantly planted with Echinodorus species is coming along nicely and I thought I'd add some more Echinodorus species. Ordered this along with the smaller E parviflorus "tropica".
Excellent speed of delivery, well packaged an the condition of the plants were first class.
They were removed from pots, separated, then grouped together in two areas of the tank, looking really good.
Brilliant service from Aqua essentials, I can honestly say you don't need to go anywhere else for plants and equipment- thanks guys!!!

Product FAQs

Helpful details before you buy.

Does it need CO2?

No — grows without CO2. Root tabs near the roots are more important, especially given the large leaf mass.

How large does argentinensis get?

40–50cm or more in good conditions — a large species best suited to bigger aquariums.

How do I fertilise it?

Root tabs near the roots are essential. As a large sword it is a heavy feeder and benefits from generous root nutrition.

Where should I position it?

Background only — needs space. A plant this size can dominate a smaller aquarium.

How do I propagate it?

Daughter plants on flower stems — detach once they have 3–4 leaves and visible roots.
