    Description

Aegagropila linnaei, better known as Marimo, is a freshwater green alga that grows into a dense, velvety ball. It's one of the simplest ways to add living green to an aquarium: no planting, no CO2 and no special lighting. Pick the pack that suits your tank below.

    Choose your pack

    • Mini - Pack of 5: five balls of about 1cm. For nano and shrimp tanks, where a larger ball would look out of scale.
    • 2cm - Pack of 5: our most popular size. Five 2cm balls, enough for a natural grouping across the foreground or around rocks and wood.
    • Pack of 20: 20 Marimo balls in mixed sizes. The best-value way to stock a new shrimp tank or a larger layout in one go.

    Care

    • Light: low to moderate. Keep out of direct sunlight, which can turn them brown.
    • CO2: not needed.
    • Temperature: Marimo prefers cooler water and does best below about 25°C.
    • Growth: very slow, only a few millimetres a year. The size you buy is roughly the size you'll keep.
    • Shape: roll them gently between your palms at water changes to keep them round and evenly green.
    • Shrimp: shrimp graze the surface biofilm and are often found sitting on them.

    What you receive

Loose Marimo balls in the pack you choose. They're not potted and need no attachment. Sizes are approximate, as each ball is a natural product. Rinse them and place them on the substrate. If one floats after transit, squeeze it gently underwater to release trapped air and it will sink.

Customers praised these aquarium additions as "healthy" and "great" for tanks. Most arrived in excellent condition with quick delivery. Shoppers loved that fish and shrimp enjoy them. Some concerns: occasional brown patches, sizing smaller than expected (though accurate per listing), and rare delivery issues causing dryness. Overall highly rated for value and quality.

Great way to buy moss balls

Bought two tubs of these, all healthy and pest free. Sizes ranged from a couple of cm in diameter to about 4cm. One tub was used to cover my spider wood branch and the others contents just left loose in the tank. Great service from AE as always.

I saw these on the internet and was fascinated by them. Having shopped around I decided on this site and they were the best value for money and also I had heard about fake ones and knew from looking at these they appeared genuine. They arrived quickly and in good order and looked healthy. I put them in water and they sank as exactly as they should. They are looking good in my large vase.

I'm pleased with the quality of the moss balls. They're a lovely addition to the tank. Unfortunately however not the best idea to put them in a tank with large goldfish. I'm growing them under pots from some of the other plants I ordered meantime.

MAJOR WARNING - Moss balls were infested with Zebra Mussels; an extremely invasive and destructive species. When released into waterways, they are practically impossible to remove and have a devastating effect on native ecosystems and infrastructure (check out issues caused in the US at the moment).

As per guidance, I've submitted a non-native incident report to the UK Centre for Ecology & Hydrology (CEH).

I must stress, this is not Aquaessentials fault, nor is it limited to Aquaessentials; infected moss balls are appearing for sale throughout the UK, EU & US. The fact they have managed to infest, then pass through an entire supply chain undetected gives testament to how resilient and pernicious Zebra Mussels are.

Everything about my purchase and delivery from Aquaessentials was positive - Would definitely use again for other aqua supplies.

Delivery was fast, but the person who packed them didn't close the seal on the plastic bag, so they turned up bone dry. I let them rehydrate for a few days so I could then clean them and add in them with my other Marimo balls (bought elsewhere), and was so shocked to find how unbelievably filthy they were. The water I cleaned them in was dark brown by the time I'd finished. I will absolutely not be putting them anywhere near my other Marimo balls. They have brown patches, which is a symptom of not enough light. They also don't hold a spherical shape, so clearly haven't been moulded often enough whilst being grown. I guess for the price I'm not sure why I expected decent Marimo balls...

I am a complete beginner with aquarium plants, and have set up my first planted tank. I knew from the beginning I wanted moss balls in my tank as I have a shrimp and heard they love them.
My tank is "hobbiton/ lord of the rings" themed and they fit in perfectly!

Giving 4star rather than 5 only because I had to rinse them quite a few times and really it’s probably as they were on sand.Otherwise I am delighted with these moss balls so much so that I bought 3 more.My daughter is taking 3 of them for her house.

Arrived in great condition and has settled well into the tank. Item was packaged well and delivery was very quick. It adds a nice bit of colour to the aquarium.

    Common Questions

    Which size should I choose?

The mini 1cm balls suit nano and shrimp tanks. The 2cm balls work as a foreground grouping in most aquariums. The pack of 20 is the best value for stocking a new tank.

Do they need CO2 or special lighting?

No — Marimo grows in low light without CO2 injection.

    They're floating — what do I do?

A gentle squeeze underwater releases any trapped air and they will sink to the substrate.

    Are they safe for shrimp?

Yes, fully. Shrimp graze on the surface biofilm constantly and are naturally attracted to Marimo.

How do I keep them round?

Roll them gently between your palms at each water change to maintain their spherical shape.
