Description

Aponogeton madagascariensis — the Madagascar Lace Plant — is one of the most distinctive and coveted plants in the freshwater hobby, producing large leaves with an extraordinary lattice structure: the leaf blade is reduced to a visible network of veins with virtually no tissue between them, creating a transparent, skeleton-like appearance unlike any other aquarium plant.

These specimens have been grown by Aqua Essentials in the UK rather than imported from overseas, which means considerably less travel stress for the plant and an easier adjustment to aquarium conditions. The lace plant is more demanding than other Aponogeton species — it prefers cooler, well-oxygenated, nutrient-rich water — but produces some of the most striking leaves in the aquarium world when conditions are right.

Position in the background and drop the bulb into the substrate; it will anchor itself naturally. Like all Aponogeton it goes through dormancy cycles. Leave the bulb in place during dormancy and it will regrow. Leaf count at time of dispatch varies; contact us if you need to know current stock size.

Product FAQs

Helpful details before you buy.

Why does the lace plant look so unusual?

The leaves have virtually no leaf tissue between the veins — only the vein lattice remains, creating a skeleton-like, transparent structure completely unique in the aquarium plant world.

Is it hard to keep?

It's more demanding than other Aponogeton species. It prefers cooler water (18–22°C), good oxygenation, and a nutrient-rich substrate. With the right conditions it is very rewarding.

Why is it better to buy UK-grown?

UK-grown plants haven't been stressed by long-haul international shipping and adjust more easily to aquarium life. These are grown by Aqua Essentials and dispatched fresh.

Does it go dormant?

Yes — all Aponogeton go through natural dormancy cycles when the leaves die back. Leave the bulb in place; it will regrow after a period of rest.

How do I know the leaf count on the plant I'll receive?

Leaf count varies depending on where each plant is in its growth cycle. Contact us before buying if current leaf count is important to you.
