Limnophila aromatica is an attractive stem plant from Southeast Asia producing whorls of toothed, lance-shaped leaves that develop warm reddish-purple hues on the undersides under good light. It is particularly popular in the aquascaping community for the warm tones and fine-textured whorled leaf form it brings to the background and midground of planted layouts.
It grows best with medium light and CO2 supplementation, which encourage compact growth and the most vivid leaf colouration. Without CO2 it can still be kept in a well-lit aquarium but grows more loosely and with less pronounced colour. Regular trimming maintains a bushy form, and cuttings root readily in the substrate for propagation.
Supplied as an established potted plant, Limnophila aromatica suits aquariums from 60 litres upward. Used in the background or midground, its warm tones and finely toothed leaf whorls create a distinctive textural quality that complements both green and red-toned planted layouts effectively.
