Microsorum pteropus, universally known as Java fern, is one of the most popular and enduring aquarium plants. This medium version comes pre-attached to a piece of natural wood, creating a ready-made planted feature with the established Java fern already secured and growing. The broad, wavy-edged dark green leaves add natural structure and depth to mid-to-background positions in the aquarium.
Java fern grows in low to medium light without CO2 injection and is tolerant of a wide range of water conditions, temperatures, and tank inhabitants including most cichlids that would destroy other plants. Growth is slow but the plant is very long-lived and requires very little ongoing maintenance once settled.
The rhizome is pre-attached to the wood so no further attachment is needed — simply rinse and place in the aquarium. Never bury the rhizome in substrate. The medium size is suited to aquariums of 50 litres and above, working well as a planted mid-background feature. Adventitious plantlets develop on the leaf surfaces and can be removed and grown on once they have their own roots.
