Description
Bolbitis heudelotii (African water fern) is pre-attached to a small piece of spiderwood, creating a compact planted feature with the fern's characteristic semi-transparent, deeply lobed fronds growing directly from the dark branching surface of the wood. Spiderwood's thin, spreading form looks particularly natural with Bolbitis attached — together they replicate the appearance of riverine vegetation growing over submerged roots in nature.
Bolbitis benefits from good water flow — position it near a filter outlet for the healthiest growth — and grows in low light without CO2 injection. The rhizome attaches firmly to the spiderwood surface over time and the plant is long-lived and low-maintenance. Good water movement matters more than CO2 for this species.
The plant is pre-attached to the spiderwood so no further attachment is needed — simply rinse and place in the aquarium. Position it where it will receive some water movement for the best results. The spiderwood sinks quickly. Suited to aquariums of 30 litres and above.

Why does Bolbitis need water flow?
In nature Bolbitis grows in fast-flowing rivers. Positioning it near a filter outlet brings nutrients to the plant and prevents stagnation, producing healthier, lusher fronds.
Does it need CO2?
No — Bolbitis grows in low light without CO2 injection. Good flow is more important than CO2 for this species.
Is it already attached to the spiderwood?
Yes — the rhizome is pre-established on the wood. Just rinse and place it in the aquarium near a source of water flow.
What size tank does the small version suit?
The small version suits aquariums from 30 litres upward. Its compact size makes it effective in midground positions in small to medium tanks.
Is it suitable for shrimp and community fish?
Yes — Bolbitis is safe for all fish and shrimp. The branching spiderwood also provides shelter and the fern fronds give grazing opportunities.
