Description

The Coconut Cave is a half coconut shell with a single entrance hole, covered with live aquarium moss to create a natural-looking cave shelter for fish and shrimp. The single entrance gives fish a defined territory with a sense of security — particularly useful for shy community fish, small catfish, breeding pairs, and shrimp that prefer enclosed spaces. The live moss covering adds a planted quality that blends it naturally into the aquascape.

Java moss is one of the most forgiving aquarium plants. It grows in low to medium light without CO2 injection and handles a wide range of water conditions. The moss will slowly spread and fill in over the coconut surface over time. It is natural, biodegradable, and a favourite of shrimp that graze on its surfaces and shelter within.

The moss is pre-established on the coconut so no further attachment is needed — simply rinse and place. The natural coconut will settle firmly to the bottom without weighting. It may release some tannins initially, which is harmless and settles with water changes. Suitable for aquariums of 20 litres and above.

Plant Sizes

The image of the plant you'll be receiving is just an example of what you can expect. Each plant is unique and may vary in size and shape, so it won't be an exact match to the photo. If we provide a size guide, keep in mind that it's just an estimate and that plants can vary in size depending on the time of year.

Product FAQs

Helpful details before you buy.

What types of fish use coconut caves?

Small catfish, loaches, dwarf cichlids, and shy community fish readily adopt coconut caves as territories. They are also popular with shrimp for shelter and breeding.

Does the moss need CO2 or special lighting?

No — Java moss is one of the most low-tech plants available and grows under standard aquarium lighting without CO2.

Will it discolour the water?

Natural coconut may release some tannins initially, giving the water a light amber tint. This is harmless and settles with water changes.

Will the moss spread over the coconut?

Yes, slowly. The moss will increase its coverage over the coconut surface over time. Trim with scissors to keep the shape tidy.

Is it safe for shrimp?

Yes — an excellent choice for shrimp tanks. The coconut cave provides shelter and the moss gives a grazing surface that shrimp use constantly.
