Description
Microsorum pteropus, universally known as Java fern, is one of the most widely kept aquarium plants in the hobby. This large version comes pre-attached to a substantial piece of natural wood, creating a ready-made planted feature with immediate visual impact. The broad, wavy-edged dark green leaves grow from a creeping rhizome that has already established its hold on the wood — ready to go straight into the tank.
Java fern is one of the easiest aquarium plants available. It grows in low to medium light without CO2 injection and is tolerant of virtually any water conditions, temperatures, and tank inhabitants including most cichlids. Growth is slow but the plant is extraordinarily long-lived. Once the rhizome is established on wood it requires almost no attention.
The rhizome is pre-attached to the wood so no further attachment is needed — simply rinse and place in the aquarium. Never bury the rhizome in substrate. The large size suits aquariums of 80 litres and above and makes an effective mid to background planted feature. Adventitious plantlets develop on leaf surfaces and can be removed and grown on once rooted.
Plant Sizes
The image of the plant you'll be receiving is just an example of what you can expect. Each plant is unique and may vary in size and shape, so it won't be an exact match to the photo. If we provide a size guide, keep in mind that it's just an estimate and that plants can vary in size depending on the time of year.

Nice piece of root. 2 large plants. Very healthy and clean. Growing well.
I toataly love this piece. I bought it for my 260 ltr tank. It's a brilliant centre piece. Its a lovely shape and the green of the plant blends well with the dark wood. The plant is lovely and healthy and well attached to the wood. My fish love it, swimming around and through it constantly. Ian Sapstead
Hi are these plants shrimp and snail safe and do you need to soak these plants in a dip
No pesticides are used with them if that's what you're asking. You don't need to soak them before placing in a tank.
Product FAQs
Helpful details before you buy.
How large is the large version?
Large pieces typically have a substantial wood base and well-established Java fern with many leaves. Exact dimensions vary as each is a natural piece, but all are suited to aquariums of 80 litres and above.
Does it need CO2?
No — Java fern is one of the most low-tech aquarium plants available, growing without CO2 in low to medium light.
Do I need to do anything when it arrives?
No — the rhizome is pre-attached to the wood. Just rinse and place.
Is it suitable for cichlid tanks?
Yes — Java fern is generally unpalatable to most fish including cichlids, and grows on wood rather than substrate so cannot be uprooted.
How does it propagate?
Adventitious plantlets develop on the leaf surfaces naturally. Once they have small roots they can be removed and attached to new pieces of wood or rock.
