Description

Microsorum pteropus, universally known as Java fern, is one of the most popular and reliable aquarium plants in the hobby. This small version comes pre-attached to a natural piece of wood, creating a compact planted feature ideally sized for smaller aquariums, nano set-ups, and shrimp tanks where a larger piece would be out of scale. The broad dark green leaves and natural wood create an immediately naturalistic appearance.

Java fern grows in low to medium light without CO2 injection and is tolerant of a wide range of water conditions and temperatures. Growth is slow but the plant is long-lived and low-maintenance. It is generally left alone by most fish including many cichlids, and shrimp enjoy grazing on the biofilm that forms on the broad leaf surfaces.

The rhizome is pre-attached to the wood so no further attachment is needed — simply rinse and place in the aquarium. Never bury the rhizome in substrate. The small size suits aquariums of 20 litres and above and is particularly effective in shrimp tanks and nano aquascapes.

Plant Sizes

The image of the plant you'll be receiving is just an example of what you can expect. Each plant is unique and may vary in size and shape, so it won't be an exact match to the photo. If we provide a size guide, keep in mind that it's just an estimate and that plants can vary in size depending on the time of year.

Product FAQs

Helpful details before you buy.

What tank size does the small version suit?

It is sized for aquariums of 20 litres and above, making it one of the most practical planted wood features for small and nano aquariums.

Does it need CO2 or special lighting?

No — Java fern is one of the most low-tech plants available and grows under standard aquarium lighting without CO2.

Do I need to attach it when it arrives?

No — the rhizome is pre-attached to the wood. Just rinse and place.

Is it good for shrimp tanks?

Yes, fully shrimp-safe. Shrimp enjoy grazing on the biofilm on Java fern leaves and the wood provides additional shelter.

How does it propagate?

Adventitious plantlets grow naturally on the leaf surfaces. Once they have roots they can be detached and attached to new wood or rock.
