Description

Anubias barteri is one of the most reliably robust aquarium plants available. Native to West Africa, it produces broad, dark green leaves on a creeping rhizome that attaches to rock and driftwood rather than rooting into substrate. It has been a staple of the hobby for decades, and with good reason.

It tolerates a remarkably wide range of conditions — low light, no CO2, soft or hard water — making it genuinely beginner-proof. Growth is slow, but the tough waxy leaves rarely suffer from algae or fish damage, and the plant will steadily spread over time. It flowers readily in aquariums, producing small white spathes which is a sign of a contented plant.

Remove from the pot, rinse, and attach the rhizome to wood or rock using thread or aquarium-safe superglue. Do not bury the rhizome — it will rot.

Customers praised this aquatic plant for being "large healthy" with "lovely bright green leaves" that provide excellent shade and hiding spots for fish. Reviews consistently highlight fast delivery, eco-friendly packaging, and robust growth. Most describe the plant as "perfect condition" and "larger than expected." One concern: a customer noted rhizome rot, though hopeful for recovery.

  • Large healthy plant, well packaged and reasonably priced, highly recommend.
  • Lovely bright green leaves, really healthy too, happy tank and fish and customer!
  • Big lush leaves, 3 more leaves already sprouted! Much nicer than other plants 10/10!

This one is doing well, quietly expanding to provide shade in the tank. Another of my 'go-to' plants, thank you! The prompt delivery and eco-friendly packaging clearly ensure that it doesn't suffer in transit either.

The leaves looked good but the rhizome is a bit rotten. I am hopeful of it recovering but only time will tell. The other two plants I recieved were in good condition.

The goldfish haven't eaten this yet, so I am happy. Seems to be growing quite well too and looks content where I positioned it. The loach don't seem to mind it either and haven't tried to dig it up so winner for me

Not usually a fan of anubias but this one has big lush leaves, had a few weeks now and 3 more leaves already sprouted! Much nicer and less compact than other anubias I have had in the past 10/10!

Great looking plant, had 5 big leaves and a few smaller ones and was in perfect health but that was expected from aqua essentials!
big leaves provides shade for the fishes to hide from the light, fish instantly started to use it as shelter

Nicely packed, nice size. I took one star off as the plant roots are super attached to the 'sponge' and it takes ages to remove it so not great.

The plants arrived within a few days in great condition. I had to leave them in buckets for a week due to a delay in receiving my tank and the plants were still in good condition when I planted them in the tank. I only found one snail in the six bunches of plants which is great as my main concern was transferring snails into my tank. I've also found the advice on the website and the daily emails really useful especially the advice regarding water changes as this is my first attempt at a planted aquarium. So far so good and my Betta is super happy in his new planted aquarium. Thank you!!

Product FAQs

Helpful details before you buy.

Do I plant Anubias barteri in the substrate?

No. Attach the rhizome to wood or rock — burying it will cause rot. The roots can spread near substrate but the rhizome itself must remain exposed.

Does Anubias barteri need CO2?

No CO2 needed. It grows steadily in low-tech setups, though occasional liquid fertiliser will keep the leaves looking their best.

How big does Anubias barteri get?

Typically 5–15cm in height, with the rhizome spreading laterally over time. Suitable for midground to background placement in most aquariums.

Why is my Anubias barteri flowering?

A sign of a happy, established plant — completely normal. The small white flower emerges above the water surface and has no negative effect on the plant.

Is Anubias barteri safe for fish and invertebrates?

Yes. The tough waxy leaves are left alone by virtually all fish including cichlids. Shrimp and snails coexist perfectly with it.
