    Description

Anubias barteri var. nana is the most popular Anubias in the hobby and one of the most widely kept aquarium plants overall. The small, glossy oval leaves are immediately recognisable, and its tolerance of almost any aquarium condition makes it a go-to choice for beginners and experienced aquarists alike.

No CO2 required, grows well in low light, and attaches to wood or rock rather than being planted into substrate. Growth is slow but dependable, and the plant spreads gradually across whatever surface it's fixed to. It flowers readily in aquariums, producing small white spathes. Shrimp and most fish leave it completely alone.

Remove from the pot and fix the rhizome to wood or rock using thread or aquarium-safe superglue. Never bury the rhizome in substrate.

So much bigger than I was expecting

This is the first time ordering from aquaessentials because I was sick of buying plants that just ended up dying from chain stores. Happy to report this plant arrived and it was 3x the size I was expecting with a root system so good I had to carefully cut the pot away from the roots that had grown out the sides! It’s refreshing to receive plants that are strong and healthy instead of the bare minimum. Thank you!

Arrived in very good condition and sooner than expected. Attached to bogwood and growing nicely. Pleco seems to like attaching itself to the larger leaves when it fancies a rest.

    Product FAQs

    Helpful details before you buy.

How do I plant Anubias nana?

Fix the rhizome to driftwood or rock — not into substrate. Thread, fishing line, or aquarium-safe superglue all work well. Roots will anchor naturally over time.

    Does Anubias nana need CO2?

No — it grows well in low-tech setups without CO2. One of the best beginner plants available.

Why is algae growing on my Anubias nana leaves?

Usually indicates excess nutrients or too much light. Shrimp and snails will graze the leaves clean. Adjust lighting period and fertilisation to rebalance.

How do I propagate Anubias nana?

Cut the rhizome with sharp scissors so each section has at least two or three leaves. Both sections grow independently. Wait until the plant is fully established before propagating.

How big does Anubias nana get?

Typically 4–10cm tall. Works well in both foreground and midground depending on tank size.
