Description
Bolbitis heteroclita 'Difformis' is a miniature form of the aquatic fern from Asia, producing delicate, finely divided fronds significantly smaller than standard Bolbitis. It is a slow-growing epiphyte that attaches to hardscape — particularly effective on lava rock or textured wood — and builds over time into a refined, intricate accent that adds detail and texture to any aquascape.
It is as easy to keep as standard Bolbitis heudelotii: low light, no CO2, attached to hardscape rather than planted in substrate. The compact size makes it particularly well suited to nano aquariums and smaller-scale aquascapes where a full-sized Bolbitis would be impractical.
Tie or glue the rhizome to wood or rock and leave it to establish. Growth is slow but the result — a detailed, textural epiphyte — rewards patience.

bolbitus a little gem!
Lovely plant. Bushy and a favourite with my Rummy Nose Tetra. Recommend strongly.
a really nice looking plant,clean & healthy,.
Wanted this plant for an emersed area as through research this plant grows emersed. Texture is like some herb plants, small dark green leaves and has a tiny rhizome. Great looking plant !
Very beautiful plant. Great condition.
Arrived after 3days in great condition and are now well established in the aquarium.
But I would like a bit more for this value
Arrived in excellent condition . It is now attached to piece of hornwood about 3 inches below surface at end of filter output stream.
It is known for slow growth. Has been in the tank several weeks now . Very little growth. But is still in beautiful condition.
Looks very healthy . Very happy with this plant.
Very nice a pretty.
Was a bit smaller than expected but non the less a beautiful little jewel in my aquarium. Will definitely buy from aquaessentials again!
Some of the leaves were damaged and black when I received this plant, but overall it was a decent plant. At the moment it seems to be doing fine, but only time will tell if this plant survives my setup. Overall, I am happy with the purchase!
Do they like lots of light?
they don't mind light but don't over do it. medium light is best.
Product FAQs
Helpful details before you buy.
How does Difformis differ from standard Bolbitis heudelotii?
Difformis is considerably smaller with more finely divided, delicate fronds — a miniature version, ideal for nano tanks or smaller aquascapes where heudelotii would be too large.
Does it need CO2?
No — it grows without CO2, though supplementation improves growth rate.
How do I attach it?
Tie the rhizome to wood or rock with thread, or use aquarium-safe superglue. Do not bury the rhizome — this causes rot.
How fast does it grow?
Slowly — but each frond that develops is intricate and adds genuine detail to the aquascape.
Is it suitable for nano aquariums?
Yes — this is one of its primary advantages. The compact size makes it excellent for nano tanks where standard Bolbitis would quickly dominate.
