Description

Cryptocoryne amicorum is a rare and attractive Cryptocoryne producing medium-sized leaves with a pleasantly wavy edge that gives the plant more visual interest than flat-leaved Crypt species. It typically reaches 15–25cm in height and is suited to midground positioning. Less commonly available than mainstream Crypts like wendtii, it's a worthwhile addition for collectors building a diverse Crypt selection.

Care is the same as most Crypts: plant in substrate, low light, no CO2 required. Root tabs encourage faster establishment. Temporary leaf melt can follow a change in conditions — leave the rhizome in place and new growth will emerge.

Plant roots in the substrate without burying the crown. Spreads slowly via runners over time.

Nice addition to my fish tank, keep in mind to buy 2-5 for a bigger tank. I only got one and she's kinda lonely but planning to get some more soon as my tank is cycled, still battling at this moment :)

I was setting up a new nano tank, and bought crytocoryne amicorum together with a few other (small) plants. Being a complete novice to the whole \'planted aquarium\' hobby, I didn\'t really know what to expect, but was pleased when these beautiful little plants arrived through my door in excellent condition. Wasting no time at all, I set up my little tank.

I was dismayed when the next day, the plant wasn\'t looking quite so healthy. 48h after planting it was looking positively terminal, together with the other cryptocoryne that I\'d bought.

Oh no!

I emailed Aqua Essentials for advice, but got no response, so did my own research and discovered that \'crypt melt\' isn\'t uncommon when moving these plants. In fact, it\'s very common. So, I embraced patience and sat back in the hope that they would recover.

Well, it took a long time, but the plants did recover. The first sign was about a week after planting, when I saw a tiny new leaf protruding from the melted mess. A few days later, I saw another. It\'s now three weeks later, and both of my crypts have lots of new leaves and seem to be growing nicely.

Phew!

So, it would have been nice if I\'d known this before purchasing (perhaps some info with the plant description) but at least there\'s a happy ending.

Lovely plant, plants bought from Aquaessentials are always (in my experience) examples which are in the best of health. I have yet to see a poor plant from this company.

Lovely plant. It looks great at the front of my newly planted tank.

When I got it out of the pot I managed to split it into two good sized plants too.

These had been in the post a week due to the vageries of Royal Mail, but still arrived in perfect condition. Good Dutch plants somewhere betwween Crypt parva and lucens, I guess. They don't melt as rule and make a great foreground plant if you're patient.

A reasonable pot-full considering the diminutive and slow growing nature of this species. I was able to divide the two pots purchased to make a small area of foreground planting in my new Crypt tank.

Product FAQs

Helpful details before you buy.

What is 'crypt melt'?

When moved to a new environment, Cryptocoryne sometimes dissolve their leaves. This is normal — leave the rhizome in place and new leaves will regrow within a few weeks.

Is amicorum hard to find?

Yes — it's less commonly stocked than mainstream Crypts. A good addition if you're building a diverse Cryptocoryne collection.

Does it need CO2?

No — grows without CO2. A nutrient-rich substrate or root tabs are more beneficial.

How do I plant it?

Plant the roots in the substrate without burying the crown.

What size does it reach?

Typically 15–25cm in height — good for midground positioning in most aquariums.
