Description

Cryptocoryne costata is a distinctive Cryptocoryne with elongated, ribbed leaves with a characteristic wave running along the leaf blade. The ribbing and wave together give the leaves a sculptural quality, and the plant typically reaches 15–20cm — suitable for midground positioning in most aquariums.

Low light, no CO2, planted in substrate. Root tabs encourage faster establishment. Like all Crypts, it can experience temporary leaf melt after being moved — leave the rhizome in the substrate and new growth will emerge. Once established it is reliable and undemanding.

Plant roots in the substrate without burying the crown. It propagates via runners and gradually expands over time.

Customers consistently praised this aquarium plant for its "superb quality" and healthy arrival. The plant "grows well in tanks" with minimal melting, featuring attractive serrated leaves and reddish foliage. Many noted the generous size allows splitting into multiple plants. Some mentioned it's slow-growing and may need higher lighting to bring out red coloration.

Another great plant, lots of individuals once divided and all have established quickly. A bit like a mini C. balansae with the crinkled edges.

This is just one of several Cryptocoryne species I have in the tank. They are all excellent mid/fore ground plants with serrated leaf edges, and reddish coloured foliage. All growing well, and filling out nicely.

Yet another great plant from AE. Good value and excellent health. So much better than the straggly examples you often get in aquatic shops. Why buy anywhere else?

Very nice plant. The colors are bright green now, but with such healthy plants I'm sure they will develop nicely in my tank.

Perfect little crypt for SE Asian style tanks - the slightly fluted, elegant leaves work well planted with Aponogeton natans as a mid/foreground transition between Hygrophila corymbosa thailands/ Murdannia keisak and other wendtii crypts. Crypt settled right in, no melting although my lighting too low to bring out the red shown in photo

A great plant, looks good and as long as it performs like other plants bought from AE it will be truly satisfying.

A beautiful dainty Crypt that looks gorgeous against a carpet of Hemianthus Callitrichoides.

Product FAQs

Helpful details before you buy.

What is 'crypt melt'?

When moved to a new environment, Cryptocoryne sometimes dissolve their leaves. This is normal — leave the rhizome in the substrate and new leaves will regrow.

What makes costata distinctive?

The combination of ribbed texture and a wave along the leaf blade creates a sculptural quality different from most Crypt species.

Does it need CO2?

No — grows without CO2. Nutrient-rich substrate or root tabs are more beneficial.

What size does it reach?

Typically 15–20cm — midground positioning works well in most aquariums.

How do I plant it?

Plant the roots in the substrate without burying the crown. It propagates via runners over time.
