Description

Cryptocoryne nevelli is a Sri Lankan Cryptocoryne producing medium-length leaves with a gently wavy margin and a mid-green to olive-green colour. It's a compact to medium species sitting in the 15–20cm range, suitable for foreground to midground use in most aquariums. One of the less commonly stocked species, it's a natural complement to the more popular Sri Lankan Crypts like beckettii and wendtii.

Care is the same as all Crypts: planted in substrate, low light, no CO2 required. Root tabs encourage faster establishment. Like all Cryptocoryne, it can experience temporary leaf melt after being moved — leave the rhizome in the substrate and new growth will follow.

Plant roots in the substrate without burying the crown. Spreads slowly via runners.

One customer noted "Crypt Melt" after transplanting, though this is normal adjustment. One plant died in sandy substrate. Overall, customers found it flourishes well.

Lovely plant, but read the website about care!

I have always loved the Crypt plants, but this one was new to me. I found some of its leaves floating today. As the rest of it looks healthy, this must be Crypt Melt, mentioned on your website, resulting from moving the plant to my aquarium. I know now that it is just adjusting to its new situation, and will regrow if I wait. I wish I'd read that about Crypts before! They're lovely plants.

Product FAQs

Helpful details before you buy.

What is 'crypt melt'?

When moved, Cryptocoryne sometimes dissolve their leaves. This is normal. Leave the rhizome in the substrate and new leaves will regrow.

How does nevelli compare to beckettii?

Similar in size and care requirements — both are small Sri Lankan Crypts. Nevelli tends to have a slightly more elongated leaf with gentler waviness compared to beckettii's more rounded form.

Does it need CO2?

No — grows without CO2. Root tabs or a nutrient-rich substrate are more beneficial.

What size does it reach?

Typically 15–20cm — suitable for foreground to midground positioning.

How do I plant it?

Plant roots in the substrate without burying the crown. It spreads via runners over time.
